In the READ SECOND thread, it says that the ps3 has not been modified yet to the extent that it can even play backups... but it also says that that is as of October '09 (over a year ago).
So what is the current status as of dec '10? And can someone update that sticky thread to reflect it?
edit: Also, I'm curious about the status of linux on the ps3. I heard rumors that they were going to stop compatibility in an update, but I don't know if that ever came to fruition (or whether it ever had merit in the first place). The only thing on that sticky thread was *nix installation tutorials, with no mention of current status. So what is it?
Why is everyone so quick to shun newbies? Not everyone has the time to keep up with all the changes going on. Right now in particular there is way too much going on as far as PS3 news to find a quick answer via google. NteStlKr did the right thing by checking the stickies first and could not find his answer. Rather than tell him to "look elsewhere", why not help the guy out? Or provide him with a link to where he should have looked (ie the [outdated] sticky).
I think he was trying to make a subtle request to have the sticky updated, while also looking for a quick answer. I can't blame him.
I have been following up on the PS3 daily for the past month or so and this is as much as I know to be correct NtwStlKr, so hope it helps:
Firmware 3.41 can be hacked via specific USB dongles to play backups and maybe some homebrew.
Firmware 3.42 and/or 3.50 was patched to prevent the hack.
Firmware 3.42+ is most likely what you'd find on a shelf today.
Firmwares up to 3.50 can be downgraded to 3.41 to enable the hack. Watch out for breaking BluRay readability--to my knowledge no one knows for sure why it's disabled on some consoles and not others after downgrade.
Firmware 3.55 is the current firmware. No PSN access is allowed without it. There is no downgrading. There are reports of spoofing the firmware, but I don't believe any of it is safe to go online with at the moment.
I don't follow the linux stuff so much, but to my knowledge is was unsupported several firmwares back.
Normally I would, but otheros was removed way back in April. If they dont know by now then it is clear they are way too lazy to look stuff up for themselves, so why should we waste our time on people who cant be bothered themselves?
Now unless this person has been in a cave for 8 months, there is no excuse, any type of google search regarding backup on the ps3 should now spring up dozens of pages.

Yes indeed dozens of pages... more to sort through than most have time for... Hence the need to update the sticky... Shouldn't a forum dedicated to the PS3 be able to provide easy access to accurate results? Rather telling them to check google first?

Fixed. You got it partially right in reading the Stickies but your answer is all over the main area where this is posted soooo...
Its funny because, i figured out which firmware the ps3 can and cannot play backups on... Hmmmmmm, i wonder how i did that without the sticky being updated. Stop being lazy. Simple questions such as these, will get flamed in here in a heartbeat! SOrry, but its the truth.
