I have been gone from the scene and this board for quite some time, and from reading the posts this morning, there are a number of new things that have happened in the duration. I have a soft-modded 4.2U, Thought I had bootmii, but not sure now (will explain). IUse Configurable USB Loader. For Christmas, I got Black Ops, and the kids got the UDraw and Pictionary to go with it. I've been reading a while this morning, and am wondering if it would be best to just update to 4.3U and then start softmodding again from scratch there, or to just update the files that are needed for these games and devices. I went in and updated both the Configurable USB loader and my homebrew channel. When I updated the homebrew, I think I lost a number of things I had in there but honestly don't know if I added those things back after the last upgrade. I saw when exiting homebrew channel that an option was "Launch Bootmii, which I selected only because I wasn't 100% positive that I had done it or not. I'm pretty sure that when I upgraded to 4.2 I did a NAND backup, so that would have to mean that I have bootmii installed, right? Anyway, in reading about pimp my wii and a few other things this morning, I was wondering if it's easier to just use that or to upgrade to 4.3 and then remod. What was gained in 4.3 as far as functionality? Sorry for the rambling - woke up early this morning and can't seem to get my brain in high gear. So my questions are:
1. Update to 4.3 and remod or just update files?
2. If upgrading to 4.3, where if the best latest guide? I noticed there's not one stickied for 4.3.
3. If updating, do I use pimp my wii, dop-mii, or something else? Where do I get those? I gather that it runs through homebrew channel, and I used to have a homebrew app for downloading programs, but it seems to have disappeared when I upgraded my homebrew channel.

Thanks for any help. In several threads I've read, there was another app that gave a system status that showed all the IOS files and their versions/states. I'll be glad to run that if someone will tell me where to find it.

If you created a NAND backup, then it is likely that you have Bootmii installed, but there are, however, other programs that have the sole purpose of dumping your NAND. The best way to check is to enter the Homebrew Channel and press HOME, then choose Launch BootMii. You should then see a screen come up with BootMii written at the bottom.
Also make sure that your sd card contains a folder named 'bootmii' containing files 'armboot.bin' and 'ppcboot.elf'

I honestly do not know much about the changes in 4.3, but from what I have read it does not improve much of anything. The main focus of 4.3 was to kill Homebrew. Most sites I have seen recommend that you keep 4.2 rather than upgrading to 4.3 firmware.

stay on your current version, and use dop-mii 14.5 to install IOS58 and IOS80. wifi is required for a easy install.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd

OK, so I had installed Bootmii as boot2. I had just taken it off the SD card because I didn't want it popping up every time we booted the wii and curious children trying to see what different things did. So as I'm typing, I'm making a fresh backup of the NAND so that I'll have it if something goes wrong. Thanks for the tip to look for the folder - found it backed up on my computer, and easily put it back on the SD card.
When it finishes, I guess I'll try dop-mii. I actually have a night at home tonight and hope to get everything fixed tonight and working for when the kids come home from a sleepover tonight.

Edit: OK, so I tried to start dop-mii, and it wanted to know which IOS or cIOS (Don't remember) to use to install the others. I didn't know, so I told it to do a search, but I didn't have syscheck installed, so it couldn't. So I installed syscheck to get a handle on which ones to use, and I think it's stuck. It's been at least a year since I did any modding other than updating cfg loader. I just haven't had the need. I was up to date at the time but feel like a complete noob now. The syscheck (v. 1.6.3) is running, and it's at the point where it says "Testing IOS vulnerabilities...Please wait... and I'm not sure the progress bar has moved in a while. The dvd drive light is blinking on and off. Not sure what to do next. Will go heat up some supper and give it a little time, but any help would be appreciated.

if you can't remember, then install IOS236.

http://www.wiihacks.com/homebrew/69700-ios236-installer-v5-dr-clipper.html

this will serve as your IOS to install/uninstall anything. and don't use the syscheck on dop-mii 14.5. it's broken and will cause a DSI exception error.

Cee, thanks for the reply. Is there any way to find out which one I used? I think on my cfg loader it uses 249. Would that be it?

OK, so now Dop-mii is working fine. I see that a number of my IOS files are older versions than current. Should I update them all? Just wondering. And for those that are Stubs, should I uninstall and then install the newer versions? I understand from reading that stubs are made by Nintendo to curb hacking, correct? Thanks.

updating each IOS to the latest non-stubbed version is what recommend, so we're on the same page.

there are a few stubs that can't be removed, because there is no earlier version to download from. so leaves those as is. as for the rest, stubbed ones should be uninstalled and reinstalled with the last non-stubbed. the current ones in use should be installed with the latest version without uninstalling.

note: if you have priiloader installed, you may have to reinstall.

Well, in case anyone else comes across this thread, please don't just update IOS's using dop-mii. I've just spent an hour learning and reading because I updated IOS 249, not realizing that I was installing a Nintendo version that would stop the functionality of my Configurable USB Loader. All seems to be well at this point, just still trying to get Black Ops to work. Am following a guide from wiihacks, hoping that it will work. Waiting while the game is ripped to my HD again.

you should've stopped after IOS80. anything higher is not recognized by nintendo, and is homebrew related.
