I just bought Heavy Rain for PS3 and it was of course flawlessly new... Now, there was this update I had to do that was around 1.2 Gb and so I let the PS3 on for like 7 hours (slow internet connection) and now I take off the disc and check in my lightbulb and there are two MINIMAL scratches like 3 mm lenght and 1 mm thick... But they weren't there I think... Do the PS3 scratches the discs like the other consoles? And NO, I didn't move it while the disc was inside and I don't think it's dirt because I tried to wipe off with the microfiber stuff and it doesn't come out!
Do you think little scratches like this one will ruin the disc or the PS3 lens? I had this Uncharted disc that got a bad, bad fall and product of it a long scratch (semicircular) that made the game still 100% playable but stuttering randomly. (That scratch could actually be felt when touching).
I have lots of PS3 games, but this never happened to me... Happened when cleaning (the obvious hairline invisible scratches) and with CD, DVD of course... But not when leaving the disc inside downloading and update.
Any ideas...? Anything...? I have a F.E.A.R. disc use scratched as hell (was a former friend's game and gave it to me) and works 100% perfect...
NOTE: Blu-ray discs are shiny as hell, to actually see scratches you have to take them close to a 25 watt bulb or similar source of light... If not, zero scratches are visible unless you damaged your disk strongly.
So you want to know if the PS3 has been known to scratch disks? Yes...when there is something wrong with the drive, that is. A 1mm thick scratch is not minor either...that is the thickness of a US dime...that isn't a scratch; it is a gouge. Either you don't know what a MM is, or there is something very wrong inside your drive.
Oh, and some games work fine with lots of scratches due to small size...if the game is only 3GB, and the disk is 25GB, then most of the disk can be scratched terribly without hurting the game data at the very center.
Will scratches ruin the disk? Eventually, especially if they are 1MM wide. Will they ruin the laser? Not really, but they will accelerate the aging slightly.
