Hi guys, I just bought an as is ps3 on ebay which was advertised as having a YLOD issue. I fixed the ylod and now I'm dealing with other issues that this ps3 apparently also has.
First off the blu-ray drive doesn't seem to work, when a disk is inserted the laser tries to focus on it several times but it never spins up (it lights up red), reason i'm mentioning this is that it might be related to the issue i'm posting about.
The main issue at this time is that whenever I try to start any demo I've downloaded the screen goes black with the HDD flashing fast, then it flickers for a second displaying some random polygons and then goes black again. There is no sound being output and at this time the hdd will randomly flash for a few seconds randomly but after many minutes nothing happens. I can browse the menus for hours and there are no glitches at all. BTW I'm using a computer monitor with HDMI input as my "tv" could this monitor not have HDCP support?
I've been doing research about this issue and people suggested using the recovery console but after many tries I get no result and the same issue persists. Not sure if this is relevant but I've tried using option 3 many times and every time it restarts it tells me that the data is corrupted, but I've tried using several drives and they all exibit this issue.
There's got to be a common issue that could cause all of these problems, does anyone have any suggestions where I can look?
Just did some more investigating, so it's not HDCP, I hooked up my ps3 via the A/V cable and the same exact issue, it loads the home screen fine, can navigate all around, but as soon as I load any game it just locks up.
Had a thought earlier, since this is a used ps3, I guess it's possible it's been hacked or possibly banned by sony, is there a way to tell if this is the case. Not sure if this is relevant, but I updated the firmware to the latest available and it installed successfully.
Thanks guys, really looking forward to some guidance
I think if your PS3 were in fact "banned" I believe you can get banned 2 ways. Your PSN account gets banned OR your IP gets banned.Since it sounds like your on PSN its safe to assume that your account or PS3 is not banned.
If your account (which is associated with your PSN ID) you can just simply create a new one BUT you lose all the stuff you bought on the PS store.
I honestly don't know anyone with a banned account,PS3,or IP address from Sony. I'm just relaying to you what I've read on the interwebs so I could be wrong.

Well, I created a new account when I got this ps3, never had a psn account before as i've never owned a ps3 before.
However, I guess to back up one step, would a firmware update wipe out any custom firmware mods previous owner did? If not, how can I go about reverting it back to stock?
I'm just shooting in the dark here. I'm assuming since I can see the home screen my hardware isn't "broken" and the black screen of death signifies some kind of software glitch.
So I bought a new laser tray assembly for my ps3 because I assumed it was dead. Lo and behold it was, after replacing it now the disk spins, and it tries to read it. However the little spinning wheel on top goes away after a while but I still don't see my game in the game section, just see the demo I downloaded.
I'm really curious if my ps3 has been hacked, and would love to know a way to do a full restore to full stock.

What a nonsense. It's better not to give any advice, than give bad one.
maddios
Your problem is just like mine, and I'm 90% sure it's your drive board. I have the same problem with one difference: my disks spin, when inserted, but never plays.
I've bought my PS3 from one place for very cheap price, but it has wrong or mismatch or faulty drive board, but as motherboard checks board always as it tries to run a game - game won't start.
I've been waiting for solution for half a year, and now, when CFW begin to appear, I hope there will be one software.
