...and tell me what's going on?
-------------------------------------------------------
First, thanks to Nephilim for answering my last message and getting me on track.

I have a Teac DVD burner that lots of folks seem to have trouble with. I have just found updated firmware and installed it without incident. I am getting a different error message than I was before when I try to burn. I am hoping that I just have something set up incorrectly. Here is the error report- any idea what's wrong?

For the record, I am trying to use DVD Shrink, DVD43 and Nero 6. My media is Verbatim. OS is XP. Lots of ram and free hard drive space.

Reinstall your ASPI layer
Heres how:

Here is the link to the ASPI utility for WIN XP which also has the ASPI chk tool within it.
http://adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=%2FOperating+System%2FMicrosoft+Windows+XP&filekey=aspi_v471.exe

Copy and paste these instructions to notepad and print them, since you'll have to reboot to complete the installation.

In advance, I aplogize if my instructions seem elementary, not all are pc savvy.

First click on the link above and download the file to the default location which will be the root of the local disk. Here is the path, depending on your drive letter, may be "c" or "d". If it is local disk d then replace the c with the d.

C:\adaptec\aspi or D:\adaptec\aspi

Now go to windows explorer, by right clicking the windows start button and left clicking explore.

Look for the adaptec folder

Double Click on the adaptec folder, and to the right, in the split window, you'll see the aspi folder, now double click it. Now you will see a multitude of files.

Look for the "aspiinst" icon and double click it. Follow the instructions.

DOnt worry that it doesn't mention anything about ASPI for WIN XP, its OK.. DONT WORRY it will work.. 4 SHO..

Once rebooted go back to the aspi folder and look for the "aspichk" icon, this is the ASPI check.

Here are the instructions to get to the folder
Double Click on the adaptec folder, you'll see the aspi folder, now double click it.

At the bottom in very light letters you will either see ASPI is installed and fully operational, which is what you want or ASPI error or ASPI is not functional or.. you get the point.
At any regard, you'll want the ASPI to be installed and fully operational.
GOOD LUCK & hope this helps

OK, replaced the ASPI as per you directions (and thanks, 321). Everything was OK and functional. Still made a coaster. Here's the error log.

Oh yeah- forgot to add. Got the famous "this disc is not empty" message again. Stuck it back in after it was ejected and then got the error message.

I would highly recommend installing ASPI ver. 4.60. 4.71 is known to cause many problems whereas 4.60 is generally regarded as the most stable and compatible version.

Here's a link for the download and a good informative guide:

Vibroking,

See the string of numbers at the very top of your logs? That's the serial # for your copy of Nero and it would be appreciated if you use the edit feature (the little pencil and paper pic at the top right of your posts) to remove it. Thanks :)

Here is just an idea. Hope you're using XP as the operating system. Didn't see it mentioned. Sometimes we forget to do all the windows updates we should. SP1 (Service Pack One) doesn't come preinstalled. SP1 contains all the drivers one will normally need. I have SP1 and have never had to add ASPI or another of the often requested drivers, Patin Couffin. Windows Update should be set up for automatic notification of critical updates and the site should be visited on a scheduled basis to see whats new in downloads for windows.

I would suggest using a RW disc until you get your problem resolved, saves damaging discs that can't be reused. Overlooked where it said failure to format. If things work properly, even if you have data on a RW, the system should quick format an RW if needed and record.

What were you doing with the Nero when you got the error?

Nephilim was right, Never put your serial out in the public domain. You should go back and edit it out.

Insert empty disc to write to.
(Medium in drive: unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD+R/RW.)

Also noticed the above, What media did you put in the disc drive?

That's part of his problem. He's got a new Dell that came with a Teac W58 DVD +R/RW single format and from what I've been discovering online the things burn to +RW like a charm but they have a bad habit of choking on +R. I was at the Dell forum and there were a lot of pissed off people ranting about it.

Serial number removed, didn't realize it was there.

Media used is Verbatim.

Windows is XP and is upto date.

From all the reading I've been doing, I'm realizing that I am not the only one with this drive that has problems. It is a Dell and it doesn't look like they are going to do anything about the bum drives they are selling.

Thank you for all your help. At this point I am considering the drive defective and cutting my losses.

Well, if they burn well with +RW and choke on +R, then it sounds like it's time to call in a tech. In one section the log said the disc wasn't recognized and in another wouldn't format. I was wondering if it was a +R or +RW in the drive when the problem occurred. Did you get the same error using both types of disc?

The XP with SP1 eliminates the need for ASPI downloads with Nero. You obviously have SP1, considering you're all up to date.
