Greetings folks, I've been reading this site since 6am this morning trying to sort this out. I hope I can get some answers here without sounding like to much of a tosser.

I have recently purchased a Pioneer DVR-107:
http://www.directron.com/dvr107b.html

I am basically looking to backup my current DVD collection, so being at the fastest and best speeds is not an issue, but having good media is. I am currently running on an AMD Athlon XP 3000, 1GB Ram (2GB page) so attaining 8x speeds should be possible, but to get solid reliable performance I just need to find a good match of media (Ritek?) and performance.

What types of media have you folks successfully used on your own 107's and at what speeds with what software?

Thanks in advance for any advice....

ritek dvd-r work consistantly for me at 8x using Nero.

there are a few different firmware patches you can apply to the player to make it burn dvd+r at 8x aswell, google 107d firmware and im sure you will see.

Read the instructions CAREFULLY though :)

I figured that the player would have some firmware upgrades out there, most recent I can find is v1.13 "Frimware update 1.13 improves recording quality" (heh Frimware, must be new) so updating the firmware shouldn't be a problem. Or are folks talking about some other non-Pioneer firmware update to allow them to write at 8x?

Some very good makes to consider would be Ritek G04, Verbatim Metal AZO and Taiyo Yuden. All three are very good quality with the Riteks being the most resonably priced and the Taiyo Yudens being the most expensive.

Thanks Nephilim, do you know if there is any major difference between burning a copy of a DVD onto the Ritek G04 at 4x or 8x, quality or performance-wise? Or are something like the Taiyo Yuden's preferred at 8x speeds? I'm simply looking to create some good copies of the DVD's I own on the off chance they get stolen or God forbid another apartment fire occurs.

I'd recommend doing some burns at 8X and then test them in all the players you'll be using. I test my copies in eight different players and found one that skipped like crazy with a disc burned at 8X but when I reburned the same files at 4X it played flawlessly.
