I bought my first xbox360 on release day (Nov 22 2005). I still have that one running good but it has never been on line at all and has had no problems. Its been run almost every day but I made an inter cooler that just plugs into the wall myself because I thought it ran hot.
I bought my son a used one so I wouldn't have to wait to play when I wanted to. I did the same thing to keep his cool. what I noticed after I got him his sixth used console was that each system red ringed almost Immediately after an update and was more than 3yrs old. They always red ringed the same day of an update. I know this could be just luck but all 6 of them and 2 were in the same day after the same update which had the konnect dashboard.
It made me wonder though is it possible that xbox live monitors and sends an update that will kill older consoles to force you to buy a new one. They would have to use the same technique used to ban modded consoles and how would we ever know without working for them. I do know a lot of consoles red ringed before the 3 years was up to but with any product there are good and bad ones that are identical. I'm just wanting to know how many of you guys that had the red ring of death had it happen ether after an update or the next time you used your console?
I almost want to log my first one on line to see if it will red ring but its the only one we have that works right now and out of fear I could be onto something till I get a new one I don't dare. I probably just have bad luck but want to here from others and how long after an update did yours red ring. Thanks for reading my post

I know what happened to my last 2 xbox360's I had gotten an error during the dashboard update. So I was partially right except Microsoft probably isn't at fault. I know I need to clear my Cache and all updates and downloads but I'm not sure how. Also once I figure it out will that wipe my hard drive? I cant access my dashboard to save my sons saves to the memory card unless I put the hard drive in another machine. My last question would be if I put the hard drive in my other xbox360 can it cause the same issue with my working one? Oh in response to the above post I've never done a drug stronger than tobbaco. I found 2 other forums where many people have had issues after an update so I wasn't alone in my thoughts but I know mine was due to a download interruption and power failure during the update process when the screen says don't shut your console down. When I logged back in the update downloaded again and did the update it had already started before. I didn't know something like that could cause an issue like that till I read hundreds of pages and posts on the net. When or if I get this one up and running again I'm going to go liquid cooled in hopes it will help it to last a while and because there are a lot of people using this here so its only turned off maybe an hour or 2 a day which I know is pushing my luck even with the inter cooler running.

Funny thing is...I just had that problem happen to me but I didn't think much of it. Switched a friend 360s cause I was too lazy to flash his on the spot. Gave him a brand new one that was manufactured in 2010 with a flashed liteon 9 series already updated for his older one he stoped playing due to the fact he couldn't afford many games. Also, he never played online. Everything was cool when I used my original HDD on his console but when I pulled out a 120GB and reseted everything...I had to update to the new kinect dashboard again and thats when I got the 3RROD. I started laughing b/c I thought it was weird timing and I knew I could fix this prob in no time but it didnt cross my mind the update could've been the problem. You never know....

Ok I used my working xbox360 and cleared the cache but I still have the kinect dashboard and my downloaded content(full games). I know the dashboard update was corrupted due to a power failure during the install part of the update and I also used this hard drive in another xbox360 that had a different dashboard and updated that ones dash. Should I format my hard drive. What I would like to do is start over like it was new and do my updates almost like you would do on a pc when starting over. Is this possible? Is it a bad thing to use one hard drive in multiple systems? I just don't want to red ring again due to corrupt files. I did notice clearing my cache got rid of 2 issues. I don't freeze up anymore or so it seems so far and I can open my tray with the controller again which stopped working months ago.
