I want to back up my wii games. I understand that only the LG GDR drives will read the DVDs. I purchased one on line and it will not find the wii disks either. I thought that it was because they sent an HL (Hitachi/LG) drive rather than an LG. I've recently been told that all GDR drives are from LG and that it is a firmware issue, not the drive.

The suggestion was use afterdawn to locate the correct firmware. Does anyone know how to do this?

What model number is the drive and what firmware is on it? For more info on models and firmware that work go HERE.

Did you use rawdump or FriiDump to dump the Wii disc? The PC is not going to recognize the Wii game. The specific drive will just allow Rawdump or FriiDump to rip the disc to your PC.

Also their are multiple ways you can make backup copies of your games. You have more options if you have a softmod. So what does your system have a softmod or hardmod?

HL GDR 8164B is the model that I have. I thought that when I hooked it up (if it was the right model) it would read the Wii disks, but it won't. If I install one of the programs that you recommended (raw dump etc.) will the disk show up then?

I don't know what firmware is on it, and I don't know how or where to check.

As far as the hard/soft mod...I have no idea. The unit was purchased this Christmas (2010) and it has not been modified.

You can not just backup a disc and then play it straight away. You need a hardmod or a softmod in order to play the backup disc.

Your newer Wii system can not play backup disc (newer systems have DVD Roms that block disc backups from playing). So your pretty much stuck with a softmod and a USB Loader.

Since you have to do this it is kind of pointless to use a compatible drive and rawdump/friidump to rip the game. The easiest way to rip the disc to a USB HDD is to use the DVD drive in the Wii itself and rip it straight to the USB HDD.

Granted you can still rip the game disc using your compatible drive.

But my point is...

option 1) You can rip the game via rawdump/friidump (which can take a few hours). Then transfer the file to the USB HDD via a backup manager.

Option 2) Most up to date USB Loaders have the option to rip the game from the Wii DVD drive right to the USB HDD in 1 shot. So your kind of saving a few steps by using this option, rather then doing option 1.

To find out what firmware the GDR 8164B has, you should be able to check via Device manager.
