I've tried 2 different kinds of media now... memorex and eworks poo poo, and both on 100+ discs skip on 93 and 91% of the discs respectively. Now, I don't think it's the media, what do YOU think? It PAUSES, REWINDS, then PLAYS BACK within 5 seconds of the skip dip. Too it and you'll be done... WE ARE BEING SCAMMED.... WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trying two brands of crap media don't exclude media from your problem list. Skipping is a classic sign of low quality media.

Until you try media such as Ritek G04, Verbatim Metal AZO or Taiyo Yuden, I wouldn't be so quick to decide the media isn't your problem.

First off try using re-writable disks until you are up and running. (no coasters) Ritek are under a 1.00 with free shipping on net.

My first thought would be media related also. Have you ever tried another brand media? What is your burner? What programs are you ripping with and how are you burning? What are your specs? etc., etc.,......

Bye the way, who is asleep and who is being scamed? LOL

I'll have 2 of whatever oxy80 was drinking. LOL, and yes, I am joking. I have learned that there is no substitute for good media. I use Ritek, and have had a few coasters since installing the updates for Nero, last week, but for the most part, my Ritek (Ridata) have saved me many heartaches.

I use the Ridata +R's.

Scuse me guys... do you all own like lots of stock in RITEK or something??? Seems like everytime I read a thread all I hear about is media, media, media, RITEK, RITEK, RITEK, VERBATIM, VERBATIM, VERBATIM...this is from one who has backuped 150+ dvd's with less than 5 coasters in the lot. using cheap fuji dvd's. I keep pushing dvd stripper, menu modder, and DVD Shrink. I happen to like the menu's and being able to pick my own chapter without having to fast forward through a couple hours worth of movie to get to the part I want to see. To each his own I guess. Aso, I'm doing this all on an ancient 233 SONY VAIO.

Is there wrong in recommending known quality media?

When youve been round the block & bought several tee shirts, and have experience of many blank DVD-R, & one brand constantly burns without failure, it really is hard not to recommend that specific brand of media. Hence Ritek & verbatim are widely recommended on this forum.

You stick to Fuji, cos I'm sticking with Ritek.

Looking for my old AD

Hi Nephilim my best to your efforts,
When you're right you're right. Gotta hand it to you there. That's why I recommend the Fuji 50 pack as a good low cost alternative. It's delivered to me, what appears to be, quality reproductions... again and again.... The 3% failure rate really isn't too bad.
To tell the truth, after close observation of the back-ups made on either Ritek, Verbatim, or Fuji, the only difference I can see is the price. I bought and tried some tee-shirts myself in my travels. Please don't misundertake me here, I really wasn't trying to put Ritek or Verbatim down, just trying to point some viable alternatives.
You guy's do a wonderful job helping people with the back-up problems and offer some terrific links to some really fine "free" software!! This forum is where I got started with experimenting after many, many positive experiences with DVD XCOPY Express.
Keep up the good work.

Well, it all boils down to what works for the individual, eh?

I've used some Fuji's in the past and couldn't complain, but since I can get a 50 pack of Riteks for $40 shipped I stick with them. Not a single coaster out of who knows how many now :)

Thanks for the help guys, I'm gonna order some new discs today... I'm using DVD X Copy Platinum to burn with... it's really simple to use and has some good reviews. I'm using an LG burner, just bought it... it never fails while buring, just skips afterwards... and sometimes only once or twice during the whole movie... sometimes every 10 minutes... I hope it's just the media... the guy at future shop told me that this was really good media.... he said he uses it and has never had a problem. Anyways, I'll try some of your suggestions... Thanks.

it seems to be not just the media, but the drive too. Meritline offers disc samplers, and that might be a good place to start... but I used to think Ritek=Good too, and have found that this is not always the case. I've gotten 4 bad batches of media in a row recently and really thought it was my drive, but I reinstalled/patched everything, and some of my good unopened jewel-box media is still burning fine (a lucky batch of Memorex).

Just wish these manufacturers would get serious about quality control. IF you can get a refund, it's still such a huge waste of time and often shipping costs. Not to mention the frutstration :(

I was not an early adopter with CD burners, but someone told me that it went pretty much the same way with those when they first came out--some media worked in some players, disc quality questionable, etc. etc. So they'll get it right eventually, one hopes.

off to look for some Fuji media

Everyone needs to download DVDInfo to tell what discs really are. My Fuji DVD-R 25 pack was identified as Ritek G03 and cost more than Ritek RiData G04 from Meritline.
Bye the way, Meritline has Lowered DVD media prices significanly in the past 10 days or so. RiData G04 50 pack DVD-R $40 last month is now $32.50 with free shipping and no sales tax.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are different grades of Riteks out there and some resellers will buy the low grade Riteks and pass them off as Grade A when they're not. Overprints are a great example of this.

Look for Riteks that are actually branded as Ritek.

The last Fuji that I bought were made by Taiyo Yuden. No problems there. I have had very good luck with Verbatim also. For the last several months I have been using inkjet printables and have been using Ritek and Prodisc. Both seem to be very good. Although there is a lot of variation, I usually get very good Kprobe scans. I have a Lite On LDW-411s hacked to 811s and a Pioneer A07 with hacked firmware to allow burning at 8X with 4X media. The Pioneer is definately the better of the two. The Lite On is valuable because it can be used with Kprobe and can change book type. I bought some 8X Ritek +R a while back and I believe that was a mistake. The Lite On burns them at 8X with PIs usually 1000 or over. At 6X about 600-900. Believe it or not, these usually play. On the Pioneer the PIs run around 200-not great but acceptable. For some reason, both of my recorders have lower PIs at 6X than 4X. If I wasn't so cheap, I suppose I'd buy verbatim printables. Verbatims (4X) burned at 6X in my Pioneer usually have average PIs of 10-20. Prodiscs are usually less than $.50 each and I get PIs of usually 50-150 average which is more than acceptable. I'm sure that other people have had different results than mine. I've tried a lot of different brands (+ & -), but it looks like, right now, that I will stick with Ritek G04 and Prodisk S03. I'm sure, though, that I'll continue to try more various crap media as time goes by. Live and learn.

Well Well Well... I noted exactly what times a few of my discs skipped at and took those discs to a friends house and they DIDN'T skip!!!! What does this mean? He has some piece of crap cheap Toshiba player and I have a brand new Panasonic DMR-E55 player that also burns from the TV... I would think that my player would play back DVD-R's better that his... but NONE of the discs skipped in his player!? Can anybody tell me what the hell is going on here? Is it just that my player isn't very compatible with the discs that I've been using so far? This is really starting to piss me off... and... WATCH OUT (from the tower top)!!!!

oxy80, I have a Panasonic DMR-E80H which is pretty much like yours except it has a hard drive. I haven't had any -R DVDs recorded on my computer that wouldn't play on the Panasonic, except for a couple of crap discs that would hang up on the computer also. It won't play +Rs unless the book type is changed to DVD-ROM, though. I guess this probably doesn't help you much. By the way, it seems that the cheaper a player is, the more compatable it is. Go figure.
