I've just flashed my xbox (=D) and before burning my first disc I thought I better know about waves.
I was looking for games and came across someone saying that they game dose not work for them and then someone else replied that they had the wrong "wave" could someone explain what a wave is and what it is used for?
Thanks.

The "wave" of the disk corresponds of the video partition on the disk. Every once in a while Microsoft updates the video partitions stored on the disk, and thus older firmwares won't be able to boot it.
If you've got the latest firmware, this is of no real concern to you right now.

A WAV is a large undulating water column in the the deep water and when it comes crashing onto the beach is mysteriously transformed into an Mp3 wavelet. A WAV file is what is played on a cd and if ripped to your HDD is fairly large. That WAV file can be compressed to an Mp3 file to fit all the small players, etc. Google is your friend!

We heard this joke once already... and if you'd read it instead of trying to be a comedian, he said wave, not WAV.

In simpler terms:
The files on the 1st batch of games (at launch) were made a certain way. Call this Wave #1.
When there is a system update, that update is also included on game discs from that point on, making these discs slightly different in structure and size from the 1st wave of discs: i.e. Wave #2.
Microsoft makes new update/changes: Wave #3.
And so on and so on and so on.

In mathematics and science, a wave is a periodic disturbance in space and time, possibly transferring energy to or through a spacetime region. A wave equation describes how the disturbance proceeds over time. The form of this equation varies depending on the type of wave.
nice and concise..

Waves are usually caused by the moving of ones hand from side to side, usually used as a greeting or a farewell. In certain circumstances they can also be used to express anger and other emotions, and can also include inanimate objects in the waving process, for example: the old man waved his stick when the little people stepped on his lawn.

When an black man or boy cuts his hair very short and uses a coarse-haired brush to continuously brush his hair in a single direction, waves are formed.

Reminds me of the kid in class who hears a joke, then tells it ad nauseum to all his friends until someone punches him in the face.
