It seems to be a ban by activision, that only applies to online play for that one game...or am I missing something?
Activision...I will have to remember not to buy any of your games...oh wait, you are already on my s**t list for about 20 other things...

No, I am mad at Activision because these bans applied to people who were playing the game from the disk, on systems that just happened to be jailbroken for other purposes. We are not talking about cheaters here...activision still does nothing about the people who are cheating with no jailbreak, yet they ban people who are not cheating with the jailbreak.

What? But they ARE doing something about cheaters, both with and without JB PS3s.
Also if these people that got their PS3 banned was JB, how did you know that they didn't JB for the purpose of cheating?Just because you JB your PS3 for your own reason does not mean that other people do it for the same. You "back up" your games so you can have a legit back up and NOT to distribute it for piracy. Other people have other ideas.
This is pretty cut and dry,Activision is banning people for cheating. These people should get going as well while the going is still good. Their lucky that they only got banned from Activisions servers and not on PSN.

How do you know that someone buying a kitchen knife is going to use it to cut food? Should I be punished for having a set of kitchen knives just because some evil bastard used a kitchen knife to kill someone?
I highly doubt that even a tiny fraction of these people are jailbreaking to cheat...not many people would even know how to do that. If you have been reading the news, you know that Activision recently made a big deal out of the claim that Black Ops does not work online with jailbreak-based cheats...they also said that all former MW games do suffer from such cheats, and then they said that they would not be releasing patches for any of these games, in spite of MW2 being only a bit over a year old. If anything, they are encouraging cheating in the older games in order to push sales of the new game...and they can't fix the problems with the new game...if they did, they would loose a sales tool for the next release.
Activision isn't going after cheaters; they are just going after jailbreakers, even those playing strait from the disk (to do the cheats that need jailbreaking, you need to be playing from the hard drive). Activision isn't making any claims about blocking pirates...they are claiming it is about blocking cheaters; and that is just a blatant lie that they are forced to tell to disguise the fact that they are banning countless people who just paid $60 for their game.

Yeah its sucks but that's the reality of it. If you have a way to determine who's using JB for other intentions then you should tell Sony and Activison how to be able to sort the good apples from the bad ones.
Until then all people that do JB are going to be pooled under one classification. If anything shouldn't you be mad at the people that are ruining JB for you?

This is only for the people that used modded lobbies and 15th prestige, so yes it applies to the cheaters and not everyone that is on jailbreak.

Wow really? I'm pretty sure I've read some of his posts before where someone called him a fanboy as well.
As for the jailbreaking, I don't care for it, but it's hard to post the complete opposite opinion when everyone on here wants to know how to do it or is posting how to do it. Then you get arguments like the one above where Bawango always says the jailbreakers and modders should be banned without any excuse warning or what not, when the PS3 forum is almost only full of jailbreaking, etc.
Can I not have my own opinion on his posts? Seems a little "one" sided there Oner...

Been called a Troll too. Here's the thing. Though I am opinionated, I have never resulted in name calling myself. If you don't agree with what I have posted I believe that you can disagree without resorting to childish name calling.Last time I checked this was Afterdawn and not N4G.
Until its ruled in the courts that JB-ing your PS3 IS legal then you should be banned without any warning but if your JB-ing you already knew that your taking a risk.
If your cheating online you should be banned. Why do I have to put up with these cheating a-holes when I am trying to enjoy playing COD? Ban them! I didn't pay $60 for BlOps just so just some little f*&% can run around ruining the experience for me.

That is the thing...the supreme court already ruled jailbreaking legal for other devices...sony is trying to get them to rule it illegal for this one device, so we are in the stage where it is still legal.
I know that only level 15 players got banned...but there were lots of level 15 players who got to that level legitimately. Not only that, but it appears that modded lobbies could be entered by anyone...it only took the jailbreak to start such a lobby. In fact, the only real user complaints I could find about this were:
1.) They are leveling up without work, and that isn't fare when it took me so long to level up for real.
2.) It isn't fun having noobs at level 15; they play like level 2 players.
3.) It is a bother to occasionally enter a modded lobby and then have to leave and go to another lobby.
Given that these comments seem to be coming from the same people who call me a pirate for using a jailbroken system, I suspect that they are not jailbreakers. Jailbreakers get banned for accidentally joining certain lobbies when they get to level 15, and no one else does...that seems to be the story from what I have read. I totally agree with banning people who start modded lobbies, but I really can't agree with banning people who accidentally enter a modded lobby.
Also, this is not cheating in the traditional online sense. That is, they are not using god mode, infinite ammo, automatic rocket launching pistols or "no clipping" against those who are playing fair. The only affect on users who are not playing in modded lobbies is the level-up cheating...and that just makes these people easy targets to an experienced (real) level 15 player. Of course, that is assuming that the cheater is not a COD veteran who was ready for level 15 before the game was released, in which case, there is really no negative impact on the other players at all.
Bawango isn't a fanboy, he is just misinformed by a corporate lie...it happens a lot in this industry. Heck, I bet there are still a few people who think that removal of OtherOS was a good thing because it prevented piracy. They are not fanboys...they are just misinformed.

Ok well after Killerbugs insightful rant I would have to say I was wrong. I still think he (Bawango) goes a little to far so I guess sticking to Troll will be fine. (And I don't believe that is name calling since he calls himself one in his signature?)
All that aside. I agree, people hosting the lobbies should be banned. I also think that the company who owns the game should step up security and ban the people responsible. Don't just look at a list of suspected modders and ban them to make the masses happy.
I also think if you buy something you own it. If I wanna backup my games to my hdd then so be it. I shouldn't have to worry about being banned and all that nonsense. If the product is worth my money then the company will keep getting it. If it's not worth my money, or time, chances are that backup on my hdd will be deleted for bigger and better things.

Can we assume that we'll be seeing reports of lawsuits from users that were banned due to entering a modded lobby by mistake?

No, I don't think we will see lawsuits because of the difficult (if not impossible) task of proving innocence. That is how civil law works...you have to prove that you did nothing wrong in order to sue someone who has taken actions against you while claiming you did do something wrong. The "reasonable doubt" applies to both sides.
Suppose I said that you ate a cheese sandwich last week...how would you defend yourself against such a claim? Even if you are lactose intolerant, I could still say that you ate it and then vomited, or that it was milk-free cheese or something. ...And if I can show that you were near someone else that ate a cheese sandwich, then that really means nothing at all, does it?
The original quote from me that started all this was, "Activision...I will have to remember not to buy any of your games"...this is still true. They are attacking jailbreak users with no proof of any crime or cheating...and I am a jailbreak user, so I would have to be a fool to pay for their games. I would pirate the games given the fact that I buy games to help studios, and I do not want to help Activision...but I'm just not the pirate type...not unless I am forced to piracy by lack of availability or something (like classic games that they don't sell anymore). I guess there isn't much lost anyway...the COD series are the only activision games I like...and the controls suck on a DS3 or 360 controller.

It's a console ban, so the next big question would be: Is it possible to change the console ID?
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

No it isn't, its a ban from the Black Op's servers, i am glad these Black Op's cheaters/lamers have been banned, they give the PS3 dev's from the hacking scene a bad name, we are in it to benefit the end user, to give homebrew and better access to the console that we bought with our money, we didn't do it so these lamers could screw around and destroy online game play for other players.

Yes, but it seems to be not an account ban from the servers but a console ban (as there seem to be people who have bought a console used and the game new and are banned without even having played it once). So if Sony comes up with the same thing for all games/PSN the question still is if the console ID can be changed.
By the way, I still think people destroying the online experience for everyone else should be banned, but not only console banned, but account banned too.

Yeah that would sounds about right, they don't deserve the privilege of playing Black Ops :)

Things like this and keys for online play, are a must to combat piracy/cheating.

If they really found an accurate way to detect actual cheaters, then I would be in favor of bans...but only of account bans. Since the whole point of this kind of cheating is just to level up accounts, just ban people over and over at level 10 or something. That way, legitimate players will land in different lobbies once they are over level 10...and players below level 10 will have that much more incentive to level up.
Again, that was all assuming that they found an accurate way to detect cheaters...like if they just banned people who started hacked lobbies.
As for changing the console ID, there will probably be tools for that soon if companies like Activision keep pulling banning innocents just for happening into a lobby while jailbreaking...and then lots of innocent people are going to get banned because the actual cheaters will be burning through random console IDs in order to level up accounts that do not get deleted. Of course activision will just blame the cheaters, and take no responsibility for creating the conditions that made the final result so obvious from the start.
Personally, I question those disk keys a lot because of issues relating to rentals and used game sales, as well as concerns about activation on systems that are not internet connected or that don't have the latest firmware version. However, I do welcome them from one aspect...I would very much like to see a backup manager that grabs your unique disk key when it rips the disk. That way, Sony would have a lot of trouble claiming that jailbreaking is for piracy...other than the games that already exist, of course. Then again, they will still claim it is for piracy, and they will still mess with us for no reason...so a big part of me still wants people to pirate games just to prevent part of the sales price from going to $ony.

I did not see another post where someone insulted him, I saw yours. As far as your "one sided" comment and "opinions" ~ you are trying to use 2 different points to make 1 of them valid and that is not the case. You can have an opinion and discuss anything to your hearts content on aD but the moment you insult someone on this forum you will be held accountable for that. Period. And yes, even for the "troll" comment you think you are being smart about, so I would strongly suggest it be left alone from this point forward as it "seems" you have moved on so this topic can go on without insults.

If it was actually a good game, I'd think you got a point here, but seriously, COD? Games like this are a dime a dozen.
