I have Windows 7 Home Premium x64. I recently started converting a few video files in MKV format to AVI using the AVS Video Converter. The weird thing is, they looked and played back fine as MKV's in my media player, but when I played them back after being converted to AVI, the audio was out of sync.

Is this something that happens every now and then or could it be the brand of converter. Any suggestions?

Not directly related to your problem, but I record tv with Windows Media Centre (.WTV) convert to MPEG then to AVI.
Sometimes the end product AVI is out of sync.
I have fought with the problem for months, but admitted defeat as to the reason.
Fortunately I can quickly correct it in VirtualDub without recoding.
Estimating the sync and changing the Audio Interleave skew does it.
It's no particular channel, and when it happens, all the converters I use end up producing an out of sync video from the source - thus I assume it's the source and not the converter.

Yeah I have messed the Audio Interleave in VDub before, but I can never seem to narrow down the correct setting. Any advice on how to deal with that?

If you play the video with VLC, you can adjust the sync with the j k keys and note the setting, then transfer that to VirtualDub.
With MPC, it's the + - keys on the number pad.

Thanks for your help...Oh I forgot to mention that when I was experiencing sync problems, the AVI's were being played back in Windows Media Player 12, but when I played then back in PotPlayer (KM Player Reloaded) I experienced no sync problems at all. Big surprise eh?
