article published on 3 March, 2011

Sony America digital distribution manager Pierre Gravreau has noted this week that worldwide PlayStation 3 sales have reached 41.6 million. The company says over 80 percent off all consoles are now connected to the Internet and there are just over 70 million PSN accounts. Nice catch.

The 41.6 million number is only through Q2 2010. Add the 6.3 million in Q3 2010 and you get 47.9 million. Add in Q4 2010 which ends March 31st 2011 and they could break 50 million.

It seems Pierre Gravreau was given old data.

Either that or Joystiq was doing its usual lazy 'reporting' and failed to mention that.

and there are just over 70 million PSN accounts.

10million are from 1 person having multiple account in different regions + GT5 that many made 2--3-5- accounts for the b-day gift car and to have more slots to trade.
I have a buddy in PSN with 7 accounts for that reason :S

I have the max number of accounts (I think it's 16?). I use them to spam online LBP trophies for myself and friends.

It is almost definitely old data or possibly (as the presentation slide shows "PSN Market") it is the number of connected PS3's to the PSN i.e. 41.6 connected to PSN (online) + 6.3 not connected to PSN (offline) = 47.9 Total which is the exact amount from the October Q4 2010 data that was released.

Edit: Looks to have been confirmed as old data ~ Source

And 80% of 47.9 million is 38.3 million, not 41.6 million...so it obviously wasn't that.
