Dual capable DVD burner and DVD-R vs. DVD+R

I couldn't find a thread on this one, so if it is here, I apologize. I understand that when I was trying to determine which media to use -/+ (as I can burn or read both) when burning PS2 games AND movies, that to burn PS2 games in anythign other than DVD-R's is dangerous to the laser lens (of the PS2 console) as it wears it out quicker due to having to read through 2 layers instead of 1. So...I wonder if this is true at all when it comes to my expensive DVD player at home if I burned the movies in DVD+R which I read was the smart way to go. My questions are:

1. When to use DVD-R/-RW
2. When to use DVD+R/+RW
3. Is there any truth to the lens burning out pre-maturely in any hardware with DVD+R/+RW's?
4. The whole reason (other than another way to make money) for using DVD+-R/+RW's?

I only use RW's if: 1)having burning problems 2)viewing results of my projects 3)storing data.

If my project is how I want it, I'll put the final on a +/-R. Also RW's are so much more expensive. I once had the thought of putting all my backups on RW's, reason was ... If a disc started to skip I could just reburn. But what I learned is just get good media.

Thanks for the thought. How about the issue of -R vs. +R media. I was told that +R would cause the laser lens of a PS2 console or perhaps a DVD player (home media not computer) to burn out quicker versus the single layer in the -R. Is there any truth to this? I am asking as I am backing up all of my movies on +R and my PS2's on -R. Does this make sense? If it does, then why shouldn't I do the movies in -R too as they are cheaper? I have to assume the +R is supposed to be better quality and thus the reason for using them versus the -R? Thanks

I've never had a problem with my media messin up my players. Just like VCR players, DVD players need cleaning also. I bought a DVD Cleaner for 10 bucks and it helped. Also I think it just a matter of compatibility. Some players work better with certain media. Check compatibility here:
