Mozilla wants to release Firefox 5 before June 21st

article published on 9 April, 2011

Facing ever-increasing competition from Google's Chrome and even Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla has announced that it will be moving to a more aggressive timetable for its Firefox browser, with Firefox 5 expected before June 21st. Firefox 4 was released just last month, after over a year of development and delays. Even more shockingly, Mozilla expects to release Firefox 6 just ... [ read the full article ]

This whole version rush is retarded and needs to stop... If people are stupid enough to think that a higher version means it's better than just let em. They're a worthless bunch of morons anyway.

Firefox has lost a little of it's luster over the years that made it a success. Lots of original bugs remain to be fixed even today. Add an decreased time frame to develop the next version and all you do is increase the bug count. Firefox will do to themselves what they did to Thunderbird if they continue.

It's probably because Firefox 4 sucks!!! It's horrible! It's slow. I have to re-load A LOT just to get the page to load. It's buggy. It doesn't play videos well. The features are dumb! The home page button is all the way to the right away from the other links...same with the re-load button.

Are you retarded or something? Firefox 4 is actually much faster than 3.xx..
As for the buggy/slow you talk about I've seen no such issues.
Videos play fine and the entire interface can be modified to your will.
If you don't like the placement of the buttons move them and shut the *bleep*.

Not necessarily. The rapid-release model actually does have the advantage of quicker feedback, whether it be positive or negative. The more frequent releases mean that new bugs and features hit the general public quicker. Hence problems are more likely to be reported - and subsequently solved - quicker.

Install this addon and you'll be able to enable old addons:

I can say for sure that skipscreen works exactly as it should, but others may not. Best of luck. :)

Maybe they think switching to whole numbers will sound more impressive, al la DoubleClick Installer, I mean Chrome.

Surely, they can't be significant ground-up reworkings, can they? In other words, it's just the same old updating it always was.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

The trouble with betas in FF's old release model is that relatively few people try them, and only a subset of those people provide meaningful feedback. With more frequent full releases, new developments will get a larger review quicker, hastening the fixing of bugs and the refining of new features.

.....a version number upgrade generally notes a re working of the main part of the application.

If 5 is not less resource hungry then what is the point of the new number?

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Lets renegotiate them.

Calling people morons is very disrespectful.

I also respectfully disagree with the whole version rush being "retarded" it isn't.

Mozilla is known for making sure that security fixes and bugs are addressed before each stable release is released.

Kudos to Mozilla. :)

I've also used FF since the beginning. And each and every release is brilliant. Customizable, safe and secure. Not to mention you can clear your browser cache quickly and efficiently. about:config and about:cache ;)

Kudos to Mozilla for doing this and I commend them. I've been using Firefox since the beginning. Each and every release has been brilliant. They take time to address the issues and the browser is the way I want to use it, not the other way around. They are competing against two mega corporations and are doing what they need to do to keep up in the browser wars. Why shouldn't they? This is what the users of Firefox have been asking for. They don't want to wait for the next stable release as long as they have in the past. Also Mozilla addresses each and every issue in the browser whether it be security, extensions, memory, bug fixes, etc.
I'm a computer instructor/tech/IT and have been in the computer field for over thirty years. I have tested many browsers over the years and personally use Firefox on my home computer. It is THE BEST. I recommend it to all my clients. Wouldn't be without it. Am looking forward to seeing the next release of Firefox and the wonderful ones thereafter. I give this browser an A+. :-D

Security fixes do not need a whole version change to take place. The only reason they are attempting such a silly inane motion is to get the version number up to where IE is in a vain attempt to gain users..
