Sony confirms, PSN is down because of hackers

article published on 23 April, 2011

Earlier this week we reported that Sony's PlayStation Network was down "for maintenance" and that Sony was saying the downtime might be a "day or two" as Sony worked to bring back all features. The shutdown is taking a lot longer than a day or two, as the PSN is still not functional, but at least Sony has confirmed why the popular free service is non-functional. Says the company, via its blog: ... [ read the full article ]

You just have to go to the NetFlix app on the PS3 and try to sign in with it a couple of times and then it lets you in to watch what you want to.

There was NO effort by the overall Anon collective to bring PSN down. I'm Anonymous, and there has been NO group effort. We had given up from a DDoS attack because Sony's servers were to good to be able to do any actual shutting down. Tried 2 weeks ago and it was barely annoying to Sony. So we changed methods to protesting at Sony stores worldwide instead. DDoS is NOT hacking! If anyone with Anon hacked Sony, then they did so without the knowledge or blessing or the group collective. I think people are giving us WAY too much credit for what can be done......PSN is shutdown WORLDWIDE, not just the US or not just EU, but EVERYWHERE.....Have any idea just what it would take to do that? It would be easier to hack into NORAD.

But I'm sure, given Sony's advantage to saying that it was us, that Sony would ever say that it wasn't. BTW - The first statement that Sony dished out was that the problem came from Japan.....they've changed their story 5 or 6 times since then about what's wrong. If we had done this as the group, we WOULD claim it.

The fact that it's occurred over Easter makes me think it's not Sony themselves... too much potential revenue lost.

I am leaning towards a breakaway fundamentalist Anon group or member. It could be a Mafia organisation trying to blackmail Sony for money.

And contrary to what some may think, I actually am sorry for the PSN users (...bar one :P). It's hard to think of a happy ending here... Do you really think they would give OtherOS back? It wasn't making them any money in attached sales.

EDIT:
Just read Thanatos63 post... interesting!

Not confirmed but comes from a reputable website (PSU) who has good ties and proven inside info before ~

Quote:
A source with close connections to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe reports that the attack to the PlayStation Network may be a bit deeper than originally reported by Sony. According to the source, who wishes to remain anonymous, the PSN sustained a LOIC attack (which created a denial-of-service attack) that damaged the server. There was also a concentrated attack on the PlayStation servers holding account information. In addition, ?Admin Dev accounts were breached.?

As a result, ?Sony then shut down the PSN and [is] currently in the process of restoring backups to new servers with new admin dev accounts.? The SCEE source said Japanese servers may be restored tomorrow while the U.S. and E.U. servers will likely be operational the following day.

While this information is only corroborated via a series of Facebook messages, it is certainly not a stretch. Sony Computer Entertainment America recently confirmed that it pulled down the PSN because of an ?external intrusion.? This essentially means that hackers were to blame. Sony is officially conducting a thorough investigation. The PSN and Qriocity services were pulled offline by Sony on Wednesday, April 20.

There was plenty of speculation late this week that the Anonymous hackers group was to blame for the PSN downtime. The group previously targeted Sony in retaliation to the legal action against another hacker. Anonymous has since denied involvement in the current PSN downtime.

Again, this information is from a source who claims to have a very close connection with someone at SCEE. We take these reports for what they are at this time, but it is certainly a possibility. If you have information to share, please do so.

"Everyone deserves the right to know what?s been going on," the source wrote in an email.

@Oner

Even if Thanatos63 is not connected with Anon it's probably true that they would claim responsibility if it was them.

If he's right when he says it's a BIG operation to DOS Sony's servers then, yeah, I'm looking at Russia.

A few years back there was this little outback horse-racing racetrack that ran their own betting site... a nice little earner and completely above board. They were targeted by Russia and given a little taste of what they could do, then a deadline demanding a percentage of all future earnings. Upon approaching Telecom, who handle the basic underlying infrastructure of telecommunications in Oz, they were told, "No worries", laughter, "tell them where to go, we'll handle it, she'll be Jake".

It wasn't. When the attack arrived it was on an unprecedented scale. The internet was crippled in most of our major cities, I think it shut down Adelaide completely. All Telecom could do was blink, and then lamely pull the plug on their address. Or to put it another way, block all traffic to their site.

Their business was f***ed, and it has never recovered.

Lately the Russian Government (read: Mafia) has been implicated in major DOS attacks on other important or significant sites. I would not put this past them or their affiliates.

I've been doing a bit of international online shopping lately and I noticed with surprise that, along with countries like Nigeria (naturally), Russia is blacklisted. Other former Eastern Block countries aren't but Russia is.

The report I saw that dealt with this and other attacks mentioned the Doomsday Worm. It's very very widespread and no-one knows what it for... yet.

I admit to speculation and perhaps some noobishness in this. If any Russian reads this, please don't take it personally.

I feel things aren't being fixed fast enough, yet i believe because it is free although $60 a game is hardly free thats why it is taking longer to fix, also I am upset about it...the first day i cancelled my world of warcraft is when the psn went down. So much for call of duty but I refuse to be like so many others and get ticked off about it, I'll go and play w/ my kids outside, maybe the hackers were doing this because they were sick of obese people on welfare playing all day on taxpayers money or athletically challenged kids(lazy ones) not wanting to get fresh air. I work allday fulltime, come home and spend time w/ my wife and kids and when they go to bed i game for a bit, so not obese or challenged but still abit upset that this happened, for me though not you :D
Heyoka, all good points! I actually got my son to go to the beach this weekend. We are taking advantage of the down time, so to speak. I actually started playing SOCOM 4 single player campaign, good fun and keeps my skills sharpened for when the servers do come back online! Keep spending time with your wife and kids my friend! Godspeed!

post #39 starts making sense but gets worse the more you read.kids do need to go out more.parents probably need to teach there kids about working & responsibility rather than buy them over priced electricals.

it could be the russains that took psn down.could also be china they seem to get more powerful every week.could also be another country.could be a group of hackers angry at sony.the possibilies are endless as a lot of people were angry at sony.

could of even had something to do with the earthquakes in japan.

@xboxdvl2

It doesn't quite seem to be China's style. They are right into cronyism, spying and other sh!t for sure but this...?

Whereas, this seems to be right up Russia's alley. They have the size and balls to maybe pull this off. I mean, if you control a massive criminal country... "Aww Jeez Sony, we had a look but just can't find them, soz".

I'm just trying to see who this would benefit and who could get away with it. Anon say they aren't involved and claim it isn't an easy operation (above). If Sony were targeted by blackmailers they may, in all probability, not want to let their shareholders know.

Suppose it could be an enfant terrible but I also see Russia sliding towards Nazism which at it's core was not idealogical for most high level members but a scam.

Sony purposely shut the PSN down, 'cos the attack to the PSN was a bit deeper "Hackers: maybe obtained the private key of SSL/TLS certificates valid for serving or intercepting HTTPS domains....like in Comodo Affair" ....than originally reported by Sony.

Here?s hoping that Sony regains control of their network soon.

Ghah...sunlight...it BURNS!!!

I would switch to a 360...if it were not for my massive collection of games that would be useless on the 360. As for the Wii, the same problem applies, plus I couldn't even repurchase most of my games because the thing does not have to power to run them. I won't be buying the next sony console, but I am kinda stuck with the PS3...the system itself is only a tiny fraction of the money I have spent on the games. On top of that my "real life" friends are all on the PSN...a couple of them have 360s, but even they don't pay for XBL gold, because our whole circle is on the PSN. I will make sure they all remember this when it comes time for us all to move to the next generation...I don't want to be forced to buy a PS4 simply because it is the only way to play against friends.
