Say hello to the Wii 2's official leaked specs?

article published on 31 May, 2011

Less than a week before their official announcement Neogaf has posted what appears to be the hardware specs for the upcoming Wii 2 (Project Cafe). If the leaked specs are accurate, the system will bring a very powerful console, Blu-ray support, backwards compatibility and finally, HD graphics. is it just me or are these specs unimpressive. I get a feeling I'll be able to build a pc with better specs for about the same price they'll be selling this.
Look at the main system RAM doesn't the six year old Xbox and five year old PS3 have as much? (I know its shared with video but come on) It should at least be twice as much if Nintendo are really gonna go with this as a long haul system.
But hey maybe I'm picking on nintendo cause the inclusion of a BRD is a really good move and I'll assume here that it has gigabit ethernet, N wifi and at least blue-tooth 3.

XXYYQQOO!!! Yeah WELCOME TO JAMROCK

usb 3.0 is needed and the usb needs to be much used this time and also, I hope you can charge the controllers using the usb just like for the ps3 controller rather than keep buying new batteries and rechargeable ones.

360 has 512MB of shared memory; PS3 has 256MB 'main' memory and 256MB video memory. Console memory is purposely kept to a minimum due to cost, heat and performance (including making any good developer optimize their code).

The specs actually look close to the PS4's rumored specs, except that the PS4's CPU may be POWER 7-based and/or dual multi-core and separate (multi?) upgraded SPE co-processor units (from the Cell, which would also make it PS3 backward compatible).

no point of naming it wii2 then. In fact, the next gen of wii console will use lots of motions than ever.

adeon R770 = Radeon 48xx series, @ 766mhz, that basically means a mildly overclocked Radeon 4870 (750mhz stock) most likely.

This type of machine would be approx 4 times as fast as 360 and PS3. It would be enough to knock out better visuals in 1080p resolutions than either existing HD console could do in just 720p. Thing is, it states 16mb eDRAM. That would only actually be enough for a 1280 x 720 framebuffer if that is its intended use. This might be an early indication that the target res of games is 720p, however 1GB of Vram would be more than enough for 1080p.

This is a fairly powerful machine. However expect even more from PS4/360 replacement. Already a Radeon 6870 is twice as fast as a Radeon 4870, and its not even high end.

Saying that, this means this machine will not be excessively expensive to manufacture- its plenty faster than the existing crop, but some way short of bleeding edge tech. It'll never come in at original wii prices, but its possible it might not be all that much more expensive than a PS3.

First the IBM PowerPC processor at 3.5Ghz is a bit different than a standard desktop/laptop processor.

Second it is amazing what you can do with that power when it only serves the purpose of playing proprietary software written to be optimised for that specific system.

I'd say it is a huge leap from the Wii in terms of power and if they retain full backwards compatibility all the way to the gamecube then Nintendo has a winner on its hands.

Gotta keep them prices down. It all depends on how the software is optimised for the power of the machine.

I find it interesting that on that SPEC sheet it shows that Component will be allowed to do 1080p. We all know that 1080p is capable on component but is never utilized due to stupid HDCP bullcrap that has the industry frowning on letting an analog signal be allowed to display at 1080p. It would be nice to see Nintendo buck the system and allow it. I'm a believer in component video as it is faster switching and I find a very good picture comparable to HDMI.

1080p via component is quite noisy, though. PS3 will do it (even though they don't claim it's possible) except for video content and it looks kinda crappy.

Wow...those are nice specs...I would say that the Wii 2 will be the best console of this generation; that is, the generation of the PS3 and 360...not the next generation.

One thing worries me...
"Custom Blu-ray Disc, up to 50 GB"
That might mean some kind of proprietary BS where you can't even watch a movie; they did something like that with the Wii and DVD.

Probably just a custom disc for the game titles like they have an encryption on it just like Sony does with their games. Seeing as the 50GB size is standard for a DL Blu-Ray I am thinking that is the case. I am pretty sure they call their game discs custom but it still plays standard blu-ray movies.

That being said Nintendo did lock out DVD playback on the Wii standard even though the unit was capable of it and those DVD discs for Wii Games were also Custom.

So long as Nintendo does away with the magic wand act, I may become a Nintendo gamer again. Never been a fan of M$, and $ONY pissed me off too much this last year.

We shall see...

the only game i liked on the wii was mario kart on multiplayer (even better when drunk).the program isnt hardware, the problem is all the games seem to be over colourful and aimed at 5 year olds or women that think it will make them fit.

custom built gaming pc from early 2010,ps2 with 15 games all original,ps3 500gbs with 5 games all original, yamaha amp and 5.1channel surround sound speakers,46inch sony lcd smart tv.

Do I like what I see? Yes. Just one thing though, how about online avatar/profile eh? While not everybody game online, but pretty much everybody like social interactions, like checking gaming stat, sharing tips/opinions, seeing friends online etc. Xbox got Live, PS3 got PSN, Nintendo needs something too.

Here's an idea, instead of achievements/trophies, Nintendo can use the coin system :)

Peace!

I 100% agree with that. Wii's biggest fail was their online gaming platform. Made it very hard to link up with people to play and lack of online titles to boot. I hope that is one thing they plan to improve.
