First off let me say this, the firmware I have installed is the firmware that is reccomended by the seller inwhich the discs were tested with. Secondly, before I rolled backed to 2.0g, I was running 2.1a, which is the newest firmware update for my drive. Man, I have checked a Gatrillion sites looking for answers to this problem and came to find that there was a billion-trillion other people experiencing the same problem that I am. The main qestion that people who offer help ask is, are you sure you're in DMA mode? Now come on, do you think that a trillion people would be experiencing a problem with their sony drive not burning 4x because of something like DMA mode not enabled. I know that there has to be something that someone knows that can help us. I don't think Sony and the manufacturers of DVD/CD media can falsely state that there product can do something that it relly can't. I will try my best to offer as much important information about my system in order for those that might can help to have the necessary information to offer the best solution.
Please tell me everything that I need to specify about my setup (outside of taking it apart) that would be necessary to draw a conclusion. I ran Nero info tool and it stated that my drive was in working order. It also stated that it was capable of a max burn of 3.1x (Sony says it was supposed to be able to do 4x) I bought some Verbatim 4x from Sams and they only did 2x. I also just recieved some dvd-r 1x,2x,4x, from ebay and they only did 1x. below is the link inwhich I purchased the dvd-r

After all that you failed to actually mention what drive you have, Nero info tool will tell you this, then maybe you could let us know
Sorry about not stating my drive. Sony 500a DRU
XP Home, 1.7ghz, 256MB. There has just got to be a solution; Too many people are experiencing this same problem for for there not to be a solution
BTW, I'm not getting any errors; I always have successful burns, just not at the speed in which the discs and drive claim.

Hi JJ636, I just did some checking on your drive to see if I could find anything to help you. http://www.videohelp.com has about 230 posts from owners of that drive. All see to have speed problems at first until upgrading to firmwar 2.0G which you have. Most owners love the drive but it does seem to be very picky about media type. One thing I would try if you haven't, is remove the drive in device manager and then re-boot and let Windows re-install the drive. This helps clear up many problems with burner drives. Can't seem to find anything else to help you at this time. Good luck.
