Consumer Reports has reported today that the new Nook Simple Touch Reader is their highest-rated e-ink e-reader, ever, ahead of Amazon's market leading Kindle. The biggest advantage of the Nook is that you are not tied to Amazon for your purchases. Several major e-book sellers have epub editions that will work on the Nook but not the Kindle. There are some smaller sellers such as Baen for science fiction titles that make mobi files for the Kindle, but for the most part you can only buy from Amazon if you go with the Kindle.

Here I thought the biggest advantage with Nook was the expandable memory via sd card and consumer replaceable battery

This is not a big problem. There few converter for make mobi (kindle format) from epub. Calibre as a huge but free monster for example. I use software from this site: epubkindle.com, very usefull - i can check books in epub format by covers and upload to kindle, which i need.
