OK, I have a Sony 500A that I'm about to DUMP! I'll be replacing it with either Plextor PX-712A (140.00) nec 2500 ( or whichever model that will do 8x on dvd+r-r) or Optorite 12X DVD+/-RW Drive IDE/ATAPI, Model DD1203. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=51069&item=5102572536&rd=1

All I'm asking is for the owners of the mentioned drives or those who know the mentioned drives to give me media information and drive/firmware information that will allow a 8x and 12x burn with dvd+r and 4x and 8x with dvd-r

For example: If you own a Plextor 712A and have achieved a 12x and 8x burn with DVD+r, please give me the brand of media, label information, media code and anything of that sort so that all I would have to do is shop for media with the given info.

I was also wondering if anyone owns the optorite drive that I mentioned. If you click on the link, you'll see that it claims to do pretty much what the Plextor 712A claims to do for a cheaper price. If you own the mentioned optorite, or know of the mentioned optorite drive, please let me know if there claim is true; I'm really leaning towards that drive if everything is legit.

Post like this one, often cause friction between owners of the respective drives. Please, the purpose of this post is not for plextor owners to bash nec owners (which I've seen a lot of) or vice versa. The sole purpose of this post is to gather information from those who have achieved results that the product is said to be able to achieve, thats all.

Once again, no drive bashing; That won't help me at all.

PS. I often watch movies on PS2, so dvd-r results at 4x and 8x will be appreciated.

Thanks to all that reply; my decision will be greatly influenced by your response to the requested info.

First and foremost I would take a tour through previous threads. Do a search for each drive and see what people are saying about the drive and what they use. If I know the forum well enough, most people will tell you that they use Ritek G04 media. However do a search and see what people are saying.

You can also look here
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
to see what some have found to be good with those drives.

Also looking here
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
will give you general info on media and help you to choose good media for your drive.

Looking here
http://www.meritline.com/dvd-r-media-4-dvd-burner-recorder.html
will show you what works with what drive, but only for the brands that they sell.

I can't speak for everyone, but I don't see drive bashing to be a problem. I don't think most people care what anyone else is using as long as it works for them.

You get what you pay for.

If I was buying right now there would be only two drives on my list: Plextor PX-712 and the Pioneer 107D. Both of these drives are known quality.

As for the Optowrite, the only worse choice you could make would be an LG.

Just as roeod4 suggested, you should run forum searches here for the drives your interested in.

I've purchased the Optorite DD1203 drive. It has been recorded that it does 12x on dvd+r and 8x with dvd-r (with suggested brand name) same as Plextor px-712A. It arrives Wed. and I'll test it and give a report after I get it installed.

Hi Deeman,

I like the Lite-on's and wouldn't hesitate to get the 851S. Damn good drives especially for the money.

That's what I have. A lot of people seem to not like them. I've had very little trouble burning even the crappiest of media. (sonics 2x)
