article published on 25 June, 2011

Ben Cooper, defending Mr Cleary, said he was concerned about him remaining in custody. The court had been told that Cleary suffers from Asperger's syndrome, being highly intelligent but with social interaction difficulties. ... [ read the full article ]

Having Aspergers which in some cases demonstrates high intelligence but social interaction difficulties is not an excuse for committing crimes. I work with plenty of autistic and asperger kids and every single one fo them , despite their emotional challenges and difficulties at maintaing social contact, absolutely know the difference between right and wrong. There are evil people who have disabilities same as there are evil people who have none. This is being used as an excuse and a smoke screen to attract publicc sympathy to his case in the hope he gests off without charge and is very detrimental to the general public's perception of what these people actually are and what they do.
Only this week I have heard 2 different people say "Well it's understandable isn't it - he's got aspergers " . Before long everyone will think everyone with this condition is incapable of understanding the difference betwen right and wrong thanks to criminals like the one arrested.

You know, the penal system is LOADED with dysfunctional ASSbergers of all kinds. None of them got special treatment of any sort.

Asperger's syndrome is no special consideration either. It's a social disorder. Bravo!!! Most of you folks that have read my stuff would probably sign a petition saying I have it too. I would even venture a guess that it wouldn't even let me off a speeding ticket.

Defense lawyers will use "any" angle to get their client the upper hand or a lesser sentence. He's guilty. Paddle his ass & set him in a corner.

I'm beginning to think if a little more humility, less PC and more parenting were practiced; and then kids would just be allowed to be kids - "some" of this garbage would be minimized.

this just proves guilty until proven innocent.i think they should let him out on bail.hes not going out bashing and raping people.hes not a major threat to society.unfortunatly we live in a society where police can lock people up and keep them in custody for aslong as they want before convicting them of a crime (thats if they get a conviction).I bet every person sitting in a jail cell thats innocent wishes they had committed the crime.
