The Apple iPad remains the only relevant tablet

article published on 26 June, 2011

According to the latest figures from comScore, the Apple iPad remains the only relevant tablet, accounting for 99.3 percent of all tablet traffic in the world. The figures also show Android with a measly 0.6 percent share of traffic and the RIM PlayBook at the remaining 0.1. Acer, Motorola, RIM and Samsung have all downgraded their tablet shipment expectations for the year while Apple ... [ read the full article ]

I thought samsung tabs were outselling the iPad? I wonder if these numbers are biased somehow; like if Android tablets were detected as phones, or if the they just used the traffic logs from a site like NetFlix (no official android tablet support yet, even though it works better on the samsung tab than on the iPad).

Killerbug you realize you jump on every apple article to criticize them. I mean yeah they have their flaws but your obsession with them is troubling. Also, how do you know it's better on the iPad than the tab if you've never owned an ipad

I have no trouble believing these numbers. I can't remember the last time I've seen someone with a tablet other than the iPad.

Tablets are just lame. Either get a laptop or use the phone.

A good follow-up article to this one........"Tablet all-in-all are irrelevant"

I have an Acer Iconia 3.0 android tablet. I love it, 10" screen 720p resolution, full usb support, micro sdhc support and internal storage for under $500.00 The ipad can't compete for what I want, 16 gb internal, 32gb sdhc and 64gb travel drives gives me over 100gb for music and avi's! I don't hate apple but I religiously refute itunes everytime I can. I want open source freedom.

I couldn't agree more with you. I have a Toshiba Folio 100, which is even cheaper than your Iconia. There are already some cooked ROMs with GringerBread for it, but, for now, I'm fully satisfied with the tablet running Android 2.3.

It beats the iPad in almost anything: 10,1" display (I still can't understand why the hell Samsung made its Galaxy Tab with only 7", which is very small to read anything at full-screen and no zooming, like a digital mag or comic book), front-facing cam, awesome performance on its nVidia Tegra 250, great battery autonomy, Adobe Flash 10.1 support, bluetooth, WI-FI (plus optional 3G), SD card slot, HDMI port, mini-USB and USB ports (can read flash drives and allows plugging a 3G dongle)... And, best of all, yeah, I'm sorry, but I must say this once again: It's ANDROID, not Apple and their proprietary OS, their propietary suckware required to transfer contents to and from a PC, and their ultra-closed policies for everything.

IMHO, people are still buying the iPad (which is news that may be somewhat biased in the numbers, but I believe) because they don't know what they are buying. I must admit that the iPad started a revolution, but now, it just makes no sense to get one if you compare it with its competitors.

Therein lies the problem..when was the last time you saw a Toshiba Folio ad or billboard? You don't. When was the last time you could into a Toshiba store and play around with one. You can't. There is the problem with competitors, they are outmatched. Motorola Xoom; I have seen ads and billboards and seen them in-stores but it doesn't mean anything.

I believe the key to this whole charade lies in the article...

The word "relevant"... To what do they mean 'relevant'. The ipad was the only thing going for a while, so it's like saying that Ogg's stone wheel was only thing relevant back in the stone age.

I'm a little perplexed... I mean as far as tablet computing is concerned. Not necessarily anymore, just for the mere fact that other companies are making them. Completely immaterial of whether their any good. Simply that others are being made renders the statement... well... 'irrelevant'.

And just to be jerky-ish... I don't own a --pad anything... yet. But I'm gravitating toward an "anything but Apple" based unit. Sorry Apple folks. Just not interested in Stevie-boo-boo knowing where I am at all hours.

Yes, you are positively right. In my country, the only tablets you can purchase via a phone carrier are the iPad and the Galaxy Tab, which is way smaller and, only for that matter, quite useless for most potential customers.

So, Apple makes money, which they invest in marketing, which eventually makes much more money for them, coming from the pockets of people who feel happy with their iGadgets whilst (and despite of) being called dumb on their happy faces.

If it was so simple, however, any major brand could use the very same strategy and get the very same results. But, and maybe that theory of the religious fanatism pointed out some weeks ago is the clue to find out why, such an approach won't work unless that hypotetical company has an apple-shaped logo, which seems pretty unlikely if your name is not Apple and you don't want to be sued for the rest of your life.

So, no matter what they'll come up next, maybe a multi-touch iTurd, starting with a black one and, one year after that, the same sh*t but all lacquered in white, they are here to stay. Shame on us humans.
