Must Read: RIM exec sends open letter on conditions within company

article published on 30 June, 2011

BGR has posted an open letter from a high-level RIM executive, one that touches on the conditions within the company as its share price, morale and brand reputation all fall to multi-year lows. The letter in itself is kind of long, but a must read if you have been following the fall of RIM from grace starting in 2008 with the launch of the iPhone 3G and the start of Android. In his ... [ read the full article ]

Oddly all this reminds me of is the whole mission statement part from Jerry MacGuire. Who bets when the guy that wrote this gets fired he flips out, steals a goldfish and yells out "who's comin' with me?"

This guy sounds like a rabid iFan; he even goes so far as to say that apple users like the products because they work, and are not released in incomplete form...this simply isn't true; the iPhone4 still does not have a working antenna, and the iPhone5 is almost here! He also talks up their closed development tools, and completely ignors the fact that Android development tools are open and cross platform...if Apple's toos are a BMW M3, Android tools are a flying jet car.

He even seems to imply that Flash support is a bad thing that they shouldn't have, at the same time that he is saying that they should listen to the customers who want Flash support. Which is it? Later, he claims he has never seen someone buy anything based on features, only based on marketting...this is a bold lie. Even working at RIM (a company that does not offer features, only word-of-mouth advertising), I am guessing he has at least seen someone buy an Android rather than an iPhone.

I do agree with him on the product line cutbacks...they have tons of phones that are the same price as some other phone they make...they need an economy phone, a highend phone, and maybe a version of the highend phone with a physical keyboard...that is it. As for tablets, that gets a bit more complicated, but that is the arena where they currently only have one model; another model there would be a good thing.

As for the corporate structure, I can't really comment much as I don't work there. However, having two CEOs is never a good thing.

Well Apple is making more money than anyone else right now so what they're doing must be working. He's using Apple because it's the most direct comparison to RIM. Google and Microsoft just make the OS while Apple and RIM do hardware and the OS for their phones.

Apple is also losing ground faster than anyone, including RIM. This is not what you want to emulate when you are trying to get customers.

Gosh, that was a weak response from RIM.

I can't speak very well to the technical points, but from a leadership standpoint, that was a real 'point-the-finger-then-hide-behind the couch" communication. It would have been much wiser to acknowledge some of the company's recent shortcomings and to do some internal & external PR to re-energize and re-engage their stakeholders.

However, instead of acknowledging the passion and caring in the tone of the original poster, they chose instead to write it off as one kooky employee who managed wriggle free long enough to holler from a window.

This can only be an ominous portend for RIM.

Apple may be losing ground right now in the smartphone market but until they suddenly stop coming up with innovations and products that work, apple will see it's growth continue, as it has for the past decade.

They have, no? As everyone stated above, the $600 iPhone 4's antenna is still a mockery, and I think their last innovation was multi-tasking and their next one will probably be Flash lmao

Too bad their sheep will continue to eat the dead grass :(

Well what do you know...? I've been pissing & moaning about just such a thing concerning corporate America for how long? And just "Now" someone 'looks' like they're a trend setter & "oh so forward thinking" in the corporate structure to say what needs to be said?

Give me a f&$#ing break. The God Kings are still drunk & strung out on their high. Even when times get bad enough that the Kings can no longer get heroin they'll just move on to methadone or another designer drug... point being, they're never going to care. Call it "Tucker: The Man & His Dream" or the Jerry Maguire reference the other folks were making; until the emperors have fallen they'll have learned nothing. What am I saying? They won't learn anything either. They'll deny & cry. Those beneath might behave & prosperity will reign for a little while, but then someone else will come along and start pissing in the pool again.

I feel for the individual who wrote the letter. When I worked for Universal I was a mouthy MFer & didn't care who I stood before and deliver the riot act. But I could also deliver the moon. This blanket letter is wonderful & awe inspiring, but if you don't have the balls to stand in front of the council & deliver it in person... Put a face to the claim; it's meaningless.

Unfortunately this reminds me of what happend to Nortel. It seems RIM overextended themselves. How soon will it be before we hear that RIM is asking for creditor protection and going bankrupt? Sad.

This is your opinion and not a fact.

I would say the opposite, but that doesn't make it a fact either.
