According to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Chinese government shut down 1.3 million sites in 2010. That number accounted for 41 percent of all Chinese websites. What he actually meant is that they have an insanely low level of freedom of offline speech, and that anonymous VPNs are the only safe way for a Chinese citizen to express anything at all. It is considered "activism" to simply state that one person should not have to support twenty elderly family members by themselves.

The border between China and North Korea is less protected than the border between France and Belgium and people still only defect from NK to China when they are on the verge of starvation...enough said?

(personally, I'm surprised China hasn't just disconnected itself entirely, putting its fingers in its ears and yelling how it can't hear us. Then turned around and made a much inferior adhoc version. The CommieNet)
