OS X Lion breaks over a dozen Adobe products

article published on 24 July, 2011

Adobe has confirmed today that Apple's latest operating system, OS X Lion, breaks over 12 of their products, another stage in the ongoing saga between the two companies that began with Apple banning Flash from running on iOS devices. The software company notes that most of its products are currently missing functionality in Lion. Apple banned Flash from iOS devices like the iPhone, ... [ read the full article ]

It's Adobe:s job to make it compatible, not Apple:s !? Software developers are responsible of their pruduct to support a certain OS. Misleading headline, again !

Exactly! Most likely, Adobe didn't stick to certain programming guidelines in parts of their software. I can tell you from experience that Apple proactively warns developers not to do certain things or they may break in future OS updates. Calling it "another stage in the ongoing saga" is utter sensationalism...especially when it was likely Adobe's bad programming habits. Apple has no problem w/ Adobe...just Flash on mobile devices.

Yeah and doubt all the people and companies who have shelled out $1,000's on adobe products are suddenly going to drop adobe products for Apple products.

There's a reason why so many people pay and use Photoshop.

Adobe support Apple only because Photoshop was on Mac first then went to Windows.

Now adobe might just cut Apple out of the loop and offer free Windows upgrades.

I agree with all the other comments by others here that this is ad0be's responsibility to ensure their software is operational on a given operating system. For me to see ad0be make the complaint that app1e did something to make there software non-operational is ridiculous at best. If this is really ad0be's way to develop and update their software for customers it further confirms to me how poor ad0b'e software really is.

Of course, this article is another call for fanboys defending the undefendable.

Apple has never honoured backwards compatibility, even with their own products. That's you people who make them feel brave enough to slap on the face of one of their historically most faithful partners instead of supporting them as the valuable assets they should be.

Shame on them and their customers, which are still being insulted because they won't quit buying every new update like lemmings heading down the cliff, despite of Steve laughing at them all the time.

So, Adobe, maybe it's time to develop and enhance your products in other platforms and see how well Apple deals with the lack of Flash, Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator, and so on.

Yes, as some of you may know, I'm proudly another crapple hater, because I have my reasons. So does anyone, even the fanboys who ignore them.

It's still Apple's job to get the proper code out to the Fortune 500 vendors so that their software will be properly compatible upon the release date. Stevie-booboo N' the funky bunch didn't do their job & now they have to scrape it off the bottom of their shoes.

This childish "my sandbox" crap has progressed well beyond old. Stevie needs to grow up, touch a booby & step into some sun light for crying out loud.

AGAIN!!! Stop trying to control people, control the situation.

Then I guess Apple will be veering away from the desktop market into the mobility market... thus increasing the MS platform for productivity and business applications(?)!. It's quite alarming that such a company would release an OS KNOWING that it would bust certain applications... (And Photoshop was always the "golden child" on the Mac!) --- but, still, Apple's shareholders are laughing!

This sounds like the exact opposite of what I heard when Vista had so many compatibility problems with printer (hardware) drivers and bloatware that the pc manufacturers put on their products. "They" felt it was the responsibility of MS to make sure their OS worked with every single piece of software ever developed. Now the tables have turned and their beloved Apple (not calling aj84 a fanboy, really just speaking in general) isn't held to the same standard. It's pretty ridiculous. I don't feel that Apple should make sure every piece of software works, but at least make sure photoshop, dreamweaver and a few others work flawlessly. This software is known for being ran on a mac.

It is a quality control measure to ensure that the most popular products will work with your new versions, and if not, you should work with companies to get patches ready. Microsoft has screwed this up in the past and they were thrashed for it...apple shouldn't get any special treatment, especially when Apple's main selling feature is that "It just works."...people pay 2x - 3x more than the hardware is worth, all to be issue free...and here apple is being massively negligent at least, and possibly outright malicious.

Yes but Lion was supposed to be a MINOR "update" rather than a full release and the OS was "supposed" to be essentially the same so pipe down with your Apple defense.

Yeah I've had the same gripes with Apple as well. They dump support for their software all too fast. Have a 3G iPhone? You're done already! (Had mine for 2 years - no more updates for me.)

As for OSX, you can only go so far and then you get no more software updates. Vendors can't even support older versions, because they will be broken. It's go with the new or nothing else. And considering the rapid releases of OSX, almost on par with once per year or year and a half, it's a bit ridiculous. MS still supports XP and until recently releasing IE9, most of their internal products were still compatible with a 10 year old OS! (Most commercial software still is.)

It's not whining, but just stating the obvious.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: I've got nothing to hide right here. Yes, I'm an Apple-hater, but I wouldn't define myself as a "mindless" one, because there are many reasons and arguments I could give ya to explain why I hate them so much. It's mainly things like this, and so many others, what makes me feel sick about them and their practices.

Defending them in this particular issue is nonsense, and yet, only expected from their "mindless" followers.

If MS created software that broke the Chrome or Firefox browser... How fast do you think they would be in court?

This is utter nonsense but not unexpected. Until you show me that Apple gave Adobe the heads up several months ago about this issue so it could be solved ahead of time I will place the blame squarely on Job's head.

Oh yeah, because your OPINIONS are inherently the truth because you think them??? That's conspiracy theorist-type thinking to basically say it's up to others to disprove an unproven believed thing...and even then, any evidence to the contrary would be dismissed as false anyway.

I don't think Apple ISN'T guilty of some questionable business behaviors (as with MOST companies), but most of the time when people who hate them (or other companies) argue, it's mostly based on personal bias more than any concrete facts or misconstruing facts to their own biases. In this case, I don't definitively say who's at fault...just say it's more likely on the developers' side from my experience. It could even be BOTH parties' faults. But of course, who has the patience to wait for FACTS when there's attacking to be done???

I hear your point, M$ i don't think would purposely actively try to break software on the windoZe platform, i assume the way they look at it, you are using their main cash cow, windoZe, and ultimately supporting them, so they are happy you are on windoZe...

However i know from working there as a tester some things will break over time just because... Mostly from security patching which i think all of us would prefer to prevent vulnerability that joe hacker could exploit and trash your machine... Additionally breaking changes may occur just from changes in the design and functionality of the operating system, (personally i still run WinXP by choice, no need for Win7 yet...). I have software i know fails on Win7 because i run it at work, but to M$'s credit they are open and let people run beta copies of the new OS version for just this very reason. That being software companies can test out and see how there stuff runs in newer OS versions. Thus my complaint about ad0be not doing diligence to ensure there products work on an OS they want to work on. I would hope ad0be would run their products on new OS versions and provide updates to users for the new OS. Ah ya, now i remember why i preferred M$ over apple, the nightmare of all the different version of the old Mac operating system and needing to buy an entirely new version or update at the very least of each product i used just because the OS (Finder) version updated... Not so with windoZe, be it good or bad...

But the bottom line for me here is ad0be should have updates ready and waiting when a new OS comes out... Heck i would argue ad0be should have beta version available for any beta user that would want to use them, ultimately that user would be testing there products too? Yet another reason i don't think ad0be is all that good, if talking i could provide many more stories why ad0be sucks.

And if people bothered to look into things, they would find out that this whole thing is rather blown out of proportion as some of the "breaks" are non-issues or have easy fixes or are on older Adobe products THEY don't even support anymore or already have updates available for. The only thing Apple really did that kinda mucks things up is no longer include Java in the default OS install and a lot of existing software that needed it assumed it was already there. Adobe knew about most of these issues well before the public release of Lion. Also, anyone using 'mission critical' software should be checking for compatibility issues before jumping on a new OS install (no matter WHAT the OS).

Yeah...Photoshop CS5 is SO ancient...I mean, it will be outdated as soon as they release CS6 in a few months. I'm sure no one uses droplets...I mean, who would ever want to do the same thing to more than one image? And who needs a countdown in Premier Pro? You can just guess, right? And sure, Livecycle won't work with any existing document that had any adobe PDF involved...but that is only like 25%-50% of the documents in existence. Oh, and Flash CS4 is so useless since pre-CS5 flash videos only play perfectly with the newest flash player...might as well pay several hundred dollars to upgrade even if you don't need any of the new features.[/sarcasm]

@xnonsuchx, yes, it's my OPINION, and it may be biased, like everyone else's, including yours. All that I'm saying is that in this case, as well as in many others, Apple people is biting the hand that's feeding them, but it won't matter, because they are Apple, and their followers will defend them till death.

The iPhone 4 antenna issue... It was their customers fault, because they didn't know how to hold their phone.

And now, Adobe's software is not compatible with an OS UPDATE (not a new release), and it's Adobe's fault.

Can't you see the pattern? They can afford behaving like that only because most of their customers have their brains washed up already.

There are plenty of Adobe software working nicely on every Windows since XP went out. Now, imagine how mad Microsoft customers would be if a Service Pack would break any product on which they had spent money, while Microsoft's service packs, unlike Apple's, are provided for FREE, and they release a new OS every 4 years, while mantaining each one for two further generations. What about that? Am I being biased enough?

This is really scary...Microsoft is starting to look like the good guys...in both PC and consoles...Isn't that one of the signs of the apocalypse? Hell must be at least partially frozen right now.
