Mac App Store now warning users that re-buy apps they acquired elsewhere

Apple's change to the store is effective as of this week.
According to Macworld, users who are forced to re-purchase their Mac apps will at least now be warned that they will be paying again for the pleasure to do so.
Says the new pop up warning:
[App name] is already installed and was not purchased from the Mac App Store
Do you want to buy [app name] again?

I think it has to do with people are just smart enough to not want to double-pay for something they bought. I'd be surprised if this doesn't go to court one day.

So let me get this straight? If you already have the app but it wasn't purchased through the Mac App store you have to buy the app again in order to continue using it?

I've never purchased an Apple product in the past and I never will. The ironic thing is Apple users like to think they're smarter than others...not.
