51 percent of gamers don't want 3D consoles

article published on 2 October, 2011

According to a survey conducted by Games comparison and marketplace site Playr2.com, 51 percent of gamers don't care for 3D consoles. The survey of 1001 "self-professed gamers" saw 51 percent vote against the introduction of 3D tech into future console releases while 47 percent said they would welcome the tech. The remaining 2 percent were undecided. For those that were not in favor, ... [ read the full article ]

The PS3 and 360 are not dedicated 3D consoles. If either of them required a 3D TV, you can bet that sales would be terrible.

I think a lot of the responses were based on existing technologies. Gamers know that you can only use 3D glasses for half an hour, and that is a major downfall. There are glasses-free displays, but they are extremely expensive, and we are not in economic boom times.

I think it is an hour...and once we see IMAX-style displays (with passive glasses), that will be about 2 hours...and 2 hours would probably be enough for the average gamer (the average gamer being a "casual" gamer). None the less, IMAX-style screens in homes are still the domain of the ultra-rich, and it will be a very long time before you see an IMAX-style TV in any size for under $1000.

It's all still mute if Steam is still choking out all the install requirements & play execution anyway. 30 minutes, 2 hours... hell, 10 seconds... What good is 3D if Steam keeps mucking up the works & won't let you play?

Some people dont care about 3d console because 1. they dont have or cant afford 3d hdtv.

2. cant see 3d even if they did own 3d hdtv.

Hell, come out with "hologram" anything! Lol, as fun as it is to pop the 3D on for my 3DS to show it off, it only brings more limitations. Certain viewing angles, how long you can view, the compromise put forth for colors and depth-of-field (leading a viewer's eye to an important area is what I mean here). And the fact that people and their eyes are all very imperfect and somewhat unique. I just don't feel the technology is anywhere where it should be to consider it for everyday gaming or entertainment use, and I don't think stereoscopic imaging will improve too much further. Holograms in the future, and IMAX technology right now seem the proper steps, as mentioned.

My biggest gripe about making any kind of big deal about 3D TV games is that there may be a distraction for developers to possibly waste time and resources on it that may be better put to other use.

OK, OK, I can't stand to wear the glasses more than about 30 minutes anyway, because the 3D effect gets lost into whatever the story line is or the actual game play. Then there is the hassle of current technology causing the 3D image forcing the viewer to focus only on what is in front. That & it's not a true 3D element. I.e., it's a flat 2D element standing out in front of another 2D element & so on.

As for the Steam comment... I can't get crap to run on my computer for the simple fact that 'Steam' & their Nazi DRM tactics have taken over my computer. Thus, as a bit of foreshadowing, how could I enjoy or loath 'real' 3D games if Steam is going to cock it up before I can get anything running right out of the box.

There, I've finished whining...
