Apple unveils iPhone 4S

article published on 4 October, 2011

New iPhone 4S is confirmed by Apple at 'Let's talk iPhone' event. After being 'leaked' in an iTunes beta update, Apple has confirmed the existence of the iPhone 4S handset. It has been speculated that Apple would unveil a more affordable iPhone handset (though that's not exactly the case), as fierce rival Samsung has been showing strong growth driven by both high-end and low-end market ... [ read the full article ]

They all over on IGN.com arguing how innovative this is. BAH waist of breath to advise them how it's not.

Yep, complete waste of time. As has been said in this thread, it is a HUGE upgrade from the 3GS, but anyone with an iPhone 4 (or a low-end Android device) need not apply. The worst part is that it took them 15 months (from the launch of the iPhone 4) to come up with all the "innovation" of today's announcement. This will, of course, buy Apple some time, but the iPhone 5 better turn some heads next summer or I fear that the company will begin to lose some of its "luster" into the future.
Nah I wouldn't call it a huge upgrade over the 3GS if it isn't from the 4... I thought the 3GS and 4 ran at basically the same speed because the 4 had the faster processor but also ran everything at a higher resolution and such. At least that's what I was told once.

I don't understand what does the 4 in "4S" stand for? Isn't this their 5th generation iPhone? Will they call their 6th gem iPhone, the iPhone 5?

They call it the "4" because it makes their customers think they are buying 4G phones. The "S" stands for a 4-letter word that I won't post.

I'm not trying to offend anyone, but even if this phone could make you breakfast and kiss you good night you still wouldn't like it because it's Apple. The biggest anti fanboy is truly a fanboy themselves (just for the opposite side).

The fact is that it can't make you breakfast...it can't even play a f**king flash video. The fact that these things sell for $300 with contract when much more capable Android phones sell for $200 with contract is an enigma...what rational person would buy one of these?

I almost bought an Apple TV box...but it took so long to get a non-tethered jailbreak that I lost interest. I will say that although I don't actually need such a device, Apple TV is unquestionably better than google TV. If apple offered good products and remotely reasonable prices, and allowed adults to turn off the censorship that prevents porn and flash and the NIN app and other such things, I would have an iPhone....so I'll probably never have an iPhone because they will probably never do any of those things, let alone all of them.

business as usual. an incremental update with one cool feature that the old line up doesn't get. the specs are good for iOS and people will probably buy them in droves.

also, a low-end android device is at least as bad as a 3Gs. don't forget you can still get phones with 600Mhz processors running gingerbread and froyo. anything under 1Ghz is garbage for android.

edit for spelling

This phone will have a 3 YEAR old design at the end of a two year contract. Not to mention, no one will know that you have a new phone. You'll be showing it off and no one tech savy will understand the difference. : \ this is coming from an iPhone user as well.

Then someone will whip out a bigger 4G android phone putting yours to shame after iCS. The thing is there are really much more capable handsets on the market but this thing will still sell well. I feel bad for the people who pay 400 bucks for the 64gb version just to be embarrassed when quad-core phones are literally a few months away.

That's not really true. If they released something unique and actually innovative, I'd be down. I loved iPods and everything when they first showed up, and the iPhone is what got me interested in smart phones; hell, digital music probably wouldn't be where it is, and Android certainly not, if it weren't for Apple. But at this point, they take two-year-old technology, wrap it in black plastic, glass, and an aluminum strip, then sell it for damned near the same amount as new devices pushing the current limit. Then they take the industry standard for delivering streaming content and spout some hypocritical garbage about it being proprietary and closed, and bam! Your $3-600 device can only effectively use like 25% of the web. Now HTML5 is starting to give some helpful alternatives, but that calls for a LOT of re-engineering (and therefore time) to get the web-majority caught up.

No, if they actually drove the industry as they did a decade ago, I would cut them some slack. But they're just another out-dating model suing everybody to hell and back so that their proprietary platform doesn't die out; they have gone from setting standards higher, to not allowing better standards to be set.

SProdigy, they're not milking you through monthly fees, they're milking you through grossly old and overpriced hardware being sold at grossly new and over-the-top prices. When (if) they catch up to the SGSII and Nexus Prime in a year or two and there are Android devices twice as capable, you'll pay the same as these new capable devices for old news and most likely there will still be an antenna problem somewhere >.>

As a web developer I'm happy in one way that Flash isn't supported and sad in another. Flash is a resource hog and incredibly bloated; both would spell doom for most smart phones and crappy data bandwidth. In other words, I feel they took the correct route.

However... the iPad is what really irks me. You're right about the pricing points and the iPhone is really only priced how it is because it has the Apple logo and helps inflate the iPad price. The iPad is a neat device, but when it comes down to it, it's not a laptop replacement, which my boss quickly found out. But since Apple decided to not support Flash on that device either, and toss in a few iOS specific CSS tags, that just gives me extra stuff to consider (and time to waste) when trying to make my sites compliant cross-platform.

And HTML5 has some ideas, but they are not mature enough. Just try to create a custom video player that will work on everything; not as easy as it was with Flash support. Ironically, Apple has basically handcuffed me to using YouTube, which is owned by their competitor. Nice.

I have a feeling the I-phone 5 will be suddenly announced about the time people get their pre-orders in for the I-phone 4S.

Im not currently in the market, but there is no way I would buy this thing knowing that Apple is about to dump the 5 on the market very soon. After all, cases are already being made for the 5.
