Nintendo has announced today that the launch of their new slimmed down Wii console, part of the "Holiday Edition" bundle which removes GameCube support, will hit the U.S. on the 23rd.
The console is 30 percent smaller than the original Wii and sits horizontally, saving space by removing GameCube memory card and controller slots.

Well, you can say that, but I don't think so. Not so long as they continue production of new games. I can't see all the Nintendo audience jumping on with the WiiU; sales of normal Wii's and these will still make up a large portion of the market due to the low price. I don't see Nintendo and developers abandoning it, and I don't see that many people flocking out to pay $250-350 just for a touch-screen add-on and the ability to finally handle HD content years after that ship took sail.
I just don't know, as far as I can tell the WiiU is just going to flop. Nintendo (no offense intended as I'm a classic one) fanboys will certainly jump on it, but it's missing the whole cheap factor that's made the original so successful.
Looks interesting, I expect more then a few complaints, but seeing as how the GambeCube wasn't a big success like the PS2; the missing functionality shouldn't be to bad.

there's also new slim wii which is blue and comes with the new sonic and mario Olympics game for 149.99 in 2012 though.
i dont get why nintendo says the game is free when in EU the console cost 99.99 and the game cost 50.00 so you really are paying for the game that comes with it unless that's EU region cost.
also, i find it strange that it comes with super mario galaxycd when it supposed to come with new super mario bros wii since it's the game that comes with it just like the RED limited edition bundle.
wait a sec, gamestop and other retails says this new bundle plays gamecube still...if it does still supports it then this a great dealwii mario kart bundle cost 134.96 right now at walmart.com
blue wii bundle for EU only for now. too bad the wii isn't powerful enough to play sonic generations because if it was bundled with the wii slim, nintendo would make lots of money.

Let me re-phrase that, after this holiday season with this bundle and Zelda, the Wii will have nothing of interest to me and it will go back to dust collecting like it is right now.
I email them about this and here's what they said :
Hello,
Thanks for contacting us with your questions about the new version of the Wii.
I wanted to let you know that the hardware included in this bundle will look, feel and function like a standard Wii system with two slight modifications:
• Backwards Compatibility - This version of the Wii will not support GameCube game discs or accessories.
• Appearance - It is designed to sit horizontally rather than vertically. This changes the placement of the Wii logo and how components such as the EJECT and POWER buttons are labeled. The GameCube controller sockets and memory card slots have been removed from the left-hand side of the console.
I also wanted to mention that we’ll be replacing all current Wii bundles with this new hardware configuration. While our focus will be on offering this newest bundle only, availability of our current bundles, which include either Mario Kart or Wii Sports Resort and Wii Sports, will vary by retailer until stock runs out. We do, however, anticipate that the current bundles will be available at stores through the holiday season.
So my I go buy it online from Walmart store like I said it cost cheaper than 150.00 at other stores :)
Same wii games needs the gamecube controller works unless they make usb for it take dance dance revolution for example, you need place to plug in the dance pad/mat.

Ah, alright then lol I certainly can see that. I can't even say when I last touched our Wii, must have been a couple of years ago when I bought the Metroid collection tin and it wouldn't play the games. I love Nintendo and their products, but I suppose I'm too "hardcore" of a gamer to play with any of it too much. Aside from the 3DS and my OoT and SF.
