Report: iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE

According to Digitimes, Apple's iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE, the first iPhone to do so.
The iPhone 5, which will likely have a June 2012 release date, will come with the embedded 4G LTE radio giving access to fast speeds on AT&T and Verizon in the U.S.
Furthermore, in the report, the site says Nokia, RIM and Sony Ericsson will launch their first LTE phones next year, as well.

This is a major step forward...the iPhone4 should have had 4G, so should the 4GS...this is long overdue.

We already do...it is just that they tend to cheap out on the batteries that come with the phones so you have to go and buy a $20 replacement for the $50 stock battery...the $20 replacement lasts twice as long. Oh wait...you won't be able to do that with an Apple; never mind.

Everyone knew that the 4GS was just a scam...people bought it anyway, and they deserve to be stuck in their 2-year contracts for doing so.
The iPhone5 is actually starting to look good...rumors of LTE support plus a quad-core processor. Given the market, they might even have a decent sized screen as well. Plus, Steve isn't there anymore so there might even be Flash support.

I don't think the iPhone 4 could've had 4G at the time of its debut. ATT's LTe network wasn't up at the time unless your talking about its HSPA+ network which seems like a farcry from T-mobiles.

Sprint had 4G long before the iPhone4 was released, and everyone had 4G when the 4GS was released.

I feel sorry for all those that had an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 and jumped on the 4S knowing rumors of the 5 and a 2012 release was imminent.
Oh Wait.. No I don't If someone feels they need to upgrade at every version of an iGadget then that is their problem

Sure all the major playes may have had a 4G network at the time but the markets that were enjoying 4G were few I would imagine. In my market, Verizon JUST activated there LTE network last week. It will be then end of the year,I believe, before Verizon has completely rolled out there 4G Network and ATT is pretty far behind I believe. Sprint? Sprint is a joke in this market. Horrible coverage, and when it comes to network upgrades, I wouldn't be surprised if my market does not even get 4G until 2013. That's wishful thinking for Sprint in this market. 2014? 2015? Nether would surprise me considering when I looked in to them a few years ago, they did not even have a 3G network in this market. Nor did they even have an ETA as to when to expect it. VZW and ATT had activated there 3G networks for this market ages ago. The only major player left is T-Mobile. I won't bash them because I have never used there network or services. I know one person, and one person only who has ever used T-Mobile here. I could be wrong, but I think the only reason she had/has T-Mobile was due to her being deaf, she used a Sidekick to be able to communicate with average people.
So in short, I don't blame Apple for not going 4G in the iPhone 4 or 4S just yet, but by the time the iPhone 5 launches in June, supposedly, I think it is time for them to include a 4G radio. Android, however, can afford to hold off to some degree due to the fact they do not release a single device every year.

You'd be surprised. I know a guy that bought an iPhone4 in black and then bought one full retail in white because he wanted a white one. Talk about a waste.
As far as the 4G goes nothing says you cannot put the 4G capabilities in and then the phone is ready as the 4G network expands. To me it is just a Apple ploy to get people to upgrade again.

Of all of the "4G" technologies currently on the market right now, the only one I think the iPhone should use is HSPA+. Wimax is being abandoned by Sprint and is slower than HSPA+, yet uses more battery life. Verizon is the only company with a decent LTE network right now and none of the handsets have decent battery life.
I really didn't expect them to release 3 different iPhone models in order to support all of these techs. HSPA+ is the only one that is developed and widely used all over the world.
My only disappointment is that the 4S is only capable of 14.4mbps HSPDA rather than 21mbps.

T-Mobile has the best 4G coverage from what I can tell...not only in terms of area covered, but also in terms of the speeds in those areas. Verizon mostly only covers areas with large populations...and they have so few towers that those areas are overloaded and as slow at T-Mobile 3G. Sure, Verizon is the closest to having actual 4G...but it is still "pre 4G" so even if it was working at peak potential with good coverage, it still wouldn't be any faster than T-Mobile (not that Verizon would let it be fast even if they could).
