Just an update on my Nero burn problems. I updated the DVD unit from 0054 to 0059 (flash program). Now it actually does burn. There is still lots of hesitation. The Drive door is very erratic. Won't open most of the time and doesn't quite close enough either. I have to push it the last 1/8 inch. How weird? Wonder what causes that. Its marketed by Microadvantage, but its a BTC 8DVDRW-B13, IDE 1008.

Another update: I did NOT find InCD4 in my add/remove programs. Also, is it possible that my drive doesn't use the ASPI, but something like STI (not sure if letters are right.) I saw something like that in Properties or DVDINFOPRO? Firmware is now current. Media does work Khypermedia DVD+R. Don't run other programs when burning. I REALLY must take lots of resources to do DVD's. My system really seems to be confused and slow to respond. Thanks to all of you who have tried to help. We are surely getting there!

ok, I did the aspi think. I dumped my old one and installed a new one. aspchk said it was installed and working properly in windows me. It only had two items listed and the example screenshot had four, but it did say it was installed and working. I do NOT have incd4. I am using memorex dvd-r. my drive is a fairly new sony dr700 I think. It is a double layer burner that is supposed to be able to burn 9 gig per dvd but I have not tried that yet since i can't find any media to buy locally.

Good lord! To many posts to sort through! First everyone needs to be using high quality media. Ritek G-04 -R or Verbatim. I use Imation DVD RWs over and over with Nero. You do not need to format them. (At least I don't), Nero will erase them if they have anything on them.
Lets see... I saw someone trying to burn a data disc with all the Joliet restrictions relaxed and multi-session enabled. That might work, but we normally don't do DVD movies that way.
Windows ME is like putting your shoes on the wrong feet, you can walk but your gonna suffer. Get XP.
The first thing you should do with any Nero problem is remove and reinstall the program. Get Nero's free utility tools.

After removing Nero, reboot, do a defrag, disc clean-up, virus scan etc. Dump the clutter and old unused stuff out if possible. Just give the thing a good cleaning. Reinstall a fresh download of the latest version, and run the Driver Cleaner and Registry Checker just to make sure.
If you are running DVD43 you will get a driver hit and the utility will disable DVD43's driver. You will have to reinstall DVD43. I have not had any driver conflicts with Nero and DVD43. They work OK together.
You don't need ultra fast PCs to burn DVDs but it helps to have at least 512MB RAM. That will speed the process up during the rip process. Burn speeds are generally set by you, your burner and the type of media you are using. Just watch your buffer levels. You can always slow the burn speed down.
Getting a failed burn during the lead-out portion is generally caused by media. Sometimes the outside edge of the disc may not be that great. Go into Shrink -> Edit -> Preferences -> Target Size and change from DVD-5 to Custom. Reduce the size of the output by 50 to 100 MB. This will cause your compression to go up a bit but now Nero will finish the burn before the bad area of the disc is reached (hopefully).

I still fail to see how that site is "better". Because you can't load the site, doesn't make it a lesser site. The site you posted is for the older ForceASPI v1.7(4.60). V1.7 will work, but force 1.8 installs the newer aspi layer.

Anyway, I am thinking that Nero Express 6 is not the problem in my drive tray not opening and closing properly. I am even considering switching the drive for another (BTC 8DVDRW-B13). I had just mentioned that I flashed the drive with 0059 and Now I can burn DVD's OK. But before that the drive door opened and closed 5 or 6 times in cycles before it would stop. After the flashing, it will hardly open!!!! Any ideas. And... I am gonna do the ASP update in a moment. Thanks for all of your suggestions. Nero is working much better than Roxio's EZ 6.0

Hello Everyone,
From reading this thread, one would think everyone is having the same problem, as the symptoms are the same.
However in this case, though the symptoms are the same the cause in each case is different.
For Example:
Looking at the log file provided by 'Whitley' we see that at first the drive detects a CMC brand of media, and then in the very next line where it states 'Insert Disc to write too.' it reports the media as unknown. This could be due to firmware; antoher program grabbing the blank media; old drivers for the IDE controller; Old ASPI drivers or new ones that are known to have problems; old version of Nero; or just poor media. I would try another brand of DVD media to see if it has the same issue, and then look to the other possibilities I listed.

Then we have the Log file provided by 'SB007':
SB007 is using DVD+R media from Ricoh Japan, has and older versoin of Nero 6.3.1.14 that should be upgraded to our latest, which is now Nero 6.3.1.20, but should have upgraded to Nero 6.3.1.17 when this issu first arose. So an older version of our software could have been the cause as we have made improvements in this area in the newer release.
In SB007 Log file, you see the Queuing error come up again. This is caused by the recorder not accepting a command from the Software as the Recorder is too busy at the time to accept any more commands. So the command goes into a QUE to await for the drive to free up to accept commands. After a set interval, the command will be reissued. If after a pre-set time the drive fails to accept a new command, the program will Time-Out and stop the process with an error.
The QUEUING error can be caused by old software; old firmware; or conflicts with drivers or programs on the system.
As you can see, though 'Whitley' and 'SB007' have very similar symptoms, the causes are not exactly the same, though even the cause such as old firmware can create different error messages, but the same symptom.
This is why the Nero log file is so very important in debugging problems. It will not always tell us exactly what the problem is, but in most cases will give us a direction to look into for resolveing the issue.

Sorry Roxydog. :-)
Your issue is a little more dificult as we never get to the point of creating a Nero Log file.
Do you have an AMD chipset? I've seen an issue recently where a similar issue like this occurs with some new 16x DVD Recorders, and our latest Nero 6.3.1.20 seems to have resolved it. So if you have not already done so, please upgrade to our latest Nero software to see if this resolves your issue.
The fact that a slower write speed works 9 times out of Ten makes a very strong indication that the issue is somehow Media and Firmware related, though you should never rule out the software as a possible cause. So the first step would still be to upgrade our software.
If the issue remains, make sure you do have the latest firmware for the recorder, and use media recommend by the Recorder MFG, in your case Sony.
You can rule out drivers and other software programs as the cause because of the fact that slower write speeds work 9 times out of 10.
But of course DMA, ASPI drivers, and IDE controller drivers can be an issue as the issue occurs at higher speeds, so you need good commnunication and transfer rates to sustain the higher speeds.

I checked there is no firmware upgrade yet, so I must be good. I have the newest Nero, I have a pentium 1 gig proccesor. I guess it must be the media. I assumed... that memproex was a decent product but I guess i will buy a few sonys to see if that helps. Thanks for all of your help.

No matter who the Media MFG is, be it Memorex, TDK, Verbatim, etc, everyone makes a bad batch of media every now and then.
Whenever media is a possible cause, it's always easiest to purchase a single piece, or 3 to 5 piece media and test to rule it out.

Hello everybody!
I am turning to you all for help.
I tried to burn a Pioneer DVD + R and I got the following Nero error message: "Compilation cannot be written on that medium type. (Medium in drive: DVD+R. Medium required by compilation: CD-R/RW.)".
I sent this to Khypermedia's 'customer support' and they told me "You are using the wrong media type. Please use a DVD+R". I guess they didn't even read the error message I sent...

Are you using Nero Ultra in DVD Mode. Looks like you are in CD Mode. Nero is showing you are in CD mode or either it does not recog. your DVD burner:

Uh.. (embarrassment setting in).. Is there a way to change to DVD Mode in Nero Express 6?
