Sprint has introduced the Express smartphone this weekend, a $20 device created by Huawei.
Running on Android 2.3, the device has a small 2.6-inch display and 320x240 resolution to accompany its full non-slideout QWERTY keypad.
Furthermore, the device has 512MB RAM, a 3.2MP camera, a microSD slot and a 1600mAh battery.
The device has 3G capability but no 4G WiMax or LTE support.

I can definitely see someone getting this if they were on the fence about buying a smartphone and had decent sprint coverage. I've never had a smartphone and I barely use my cellphone at all, it is just for emergencies but being able to check some things on the internet while I'm out and about would be convenient sometimes. Sprint works pretty good in my area and I've been considering getting in on republic wireless. The only thing that has stopped me was the 200 dollar phone you had to buy. If they got something like this it would be a no brainer.

You do know that Amazon constantly has cell phone deals going on? All the major carriers and usually $0.00.
i will never buy a phone with contract through 3rd parties. a lot of people have no problems but for those who do it turns out to be a horror story. i should know i got a ton of calls while working for at&t mobility from people who had issues upgrading through amazon, best buy, etc. sprint has the lg optimus s for free and it has similar specs and a larger screen. it has decent reviews too. sprint costs more than my current (legacy alltel) plan with verizon though.

I got the Droid 2 Global from Verizon through the Tiger Direct website for $40. Never had any problems. Was one of the first ones to get the Gingerbread update.

I think he was talking about updating your plan/phone, not software updates.
