AVCHD video editing help

Got a question and as this forum has been a godsend in the past, I thought it might be worth asking people here.

In the past I've used Avidemux for video editing and it's been brilliant. However my girlfriend and I recently purchased a Sony NEX-VG10 and as it records in AVCHD format, I'm not sure how compatible Avidemux will be with it (a google search didn't make things that clear).

Is Avidemux AVCHD compatible and if not, is there anything in the way of free editing software which is at least as powerful as Avidemux and is able to work with AVCHD files?

Any help people could be would be greatly appreciated.
