Xbox Next will use Blu-ray, not play used games

article published on 27 January, 2012

According to Kotaku, Microsoft's upcoming console will play Blu-ray discs, catching up to Sony 7 years after the launch of the PS3. Another part of the report that will certainly be notable if true, is the notion that Microsoft will "incorporate some sort of anti-used game system" in the new console. It is unclear how this system would work, but it will likely not be foolproof, regardless. ... [ read the full article ]

Surprised no one here has mentioned this, but.... Not sure how they would implement a no used games feature, but I am assuming that would also kill rentals for video games.

I get that with my 5870 ALL THE TIME. I gave up trying to update the driver. I can play my game for 5 min and whammo! My comp crashes. If I keep the original drivers installed I dont get that problem so that's what I do. I will def be going nvidia next time.
If you getting that kind of reaction you likely have a mid-tower PC and the card itself is over-heating. If you not running LCS, then you need to open up the side panel and stick a floor fan beside it, then your card will cool down enough not to crash.

It's what I did for my PC for now, since I can't order LCS parts for my tri-fire 5870s. And that works just fine.

Will this kill game rentals as well? Gamefly? Redbox? interesting if this is so, most people will not buy a game they can play through in a few hours for $60.00 no matter how much fun they may be.

What if you have more one xbox in your house? I thought Batman Arkham City handled it well, excluding the catwoman. The responsibility should be on the maker of the game if they don't want to kill the second hand market.

My guess is that this "anti-used game policy," if accurate, will be like EA's online pass thing, where if you buy a used game you have to buy a new activation code for $10 or whatever it is.

I will guess that the used game issue will more likely be a ripped disc and they will use cinavia

Meh it's all irrelevant till it comes from the horses mouth, personally i treat any reports of this nature with the contempt they deserve, honestly using a graphic card that's outdated..wtf.. did they do the same with the 360 ?,regardless if the console is restricted to a hdd under 2tb or limit an external size, can't natively play all vid formats without a hack, can't run xbmc then they can shove it right back you know where,ok i just threw that xbmc in there since i was on a roll :p

If EA can do it why not Microshaft? EA charges you 10 bucks + whatever you payed used...they claim its for a license to use the program which is non-transferable(unless stated otherwise by the owner)

The First Sale Doctrine doesn't cover licensing rights such as CD keys or access codes.

its a shame, but i see it happening.

Whelp, just the rumor of tracking and denying used games is enough to keep me away from the system. Until this has been 100% dispelled AFTER launch, I'm 100% not touching the pile.
And it's going to ship with an obsolete video card that Intel will have better capabilities built into it's CPUs? Wow, what idiots. Sounds like I'm going to be sitting out the next generation of consoles.

AKA, always on DRM. "This disc is marked as do not play. Please sign into your XBL account and provide serial number and proper authorization in order to receive authorization of decryption key."

Are you surprised from a company who's been pushing for software as a service for more than a decade? They don't want you use use Windows or Office without paying a monthly subscription fee, why would they want you playing GTA6 w/o one?
And who's going to provide the competition so they can't get away with this in a free market? $ony? They'll (have?) meet with M$ behind closed doors and agree to do the same thing with their system. Any other competitor will be financially assaulted if they attempt to enter the console market.

P.S. You let Steam and WoW in. The new trend is "Facebook 'micro' transaction" games. These guys see this happen, and know they can get away with it.

We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers.
The experience here being not being able to purchase games used.
