Hi,
I have just burned an img. file ( converted it to iso file by renaming it) and burned it using my Philps dvdrw824 dvd writer. The first file seemed to work fine but, unfortunately started skipping after a little while.(film)
I have tried two different types of media: HP dvd-r 8x and SKY dvd-r 8x.
Besides this issue I have also encountered a problem with the burning speed. After having flashed the drive using the appropriate firmware, it still only burns at 1x speed.
I am using Nero burning rom 6.3.0.6
I have got an athlon 533mhz with 128 ram internal memory

What ever player you are using... check it's compatibility here http://www.vidoehelp.com/dvdplayers

Where did you get your firmware? RPC1? And do you know, an improperly flashed drive can ruin your drive?

Hi there Robaski , Welcome to our little Club,
Quote: I have got an athlon 533mhz with 128 ram internal memory
Well there my friend, looking at what your specs are - you're on the low side with your processor but with 128MB of RAM you have a severe bottleneck there -
Your burner can only go as fast as the information arrives and with 128MB, it's on a slow boat - My guess is if you could get to 512MB of RAM you'd see a dramatic increase in burning speed - 512MB isn't realistic so try to get to 256MB - that would help allot :-)
Quote: I have tried two different types of media: HP dvd-r 8x and SKY dvd-r 8x.
I say there Guy, I say, iffin you're a-going ta cross a stream and ya go from one bad stone to another, you're going ta get your feet wet :-)
What I mean to say is you have to get the right media for backups - this isn't like anything else you've ever done on your PC with CD's or data or spreadsheets or even music on DVD's - this is a different kind of game -
* Cheap media freezes, skips, stutters, pixelats, partially jams, may be rejected and lest we forget, our old standby, giving you the old just, refuses to be recognized routine :-(
Besides "Freezing", "skips" and pixelations, many times you'll get a "Cyclic Redundancy error" or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won't accept your "cheap" media :-(
Another problem which "pops up" is a "*Power Calibration Error". This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media.
*A "Power Calibration Error" can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn't usually the case. Trying to shut down your software and ejecting your DVD then restarting your program and re-inserting the same media recently cleaned has been known to help.
Inexpensive media or even average media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - Blatant! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way !
2. A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
"Branded" Ritek G04's or Branded Verbatim are what we're looking for OR any media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO.", this indicates a superior dye application, while they are sometimes a bit "pricey" they are acceptable.
Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 down below a dollar a disc -
Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap or even average discs and good copies from 3 Branded Verbatim discs or 3 "Branded" Ritek G04 discs - which ones then will you say are too expensive ? The 3 "Cheapo's with no movie backup OR, the 3 recommended discs with a perfect backup on each disc ?
Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don't work well for DVD backups. Even DataSafe G04's made by Ritek have been reported as inferior quality and are evoking that "Oh no, I shouldn't have gotten those."
Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-(
Let's try the right media for the job - just buy a 5 pack of what we recommend that will settle it once and for all - Don't cheat though, buy the EXACT media we recommended -
Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty; it surely cannot hurt.
BTW, In an effort to clear the air, when I speak of "Cheap" or "Inexpensive" media, I'm not referring to the price you pay at the counter - I'm referring to the way the manufacturer's cut the corners during the manufacture of the discs and the quality control used during manufacturing. And when I say "Branded" that means that when you pick up a disc in your hand, it says "Ritek" or "Verbatim" on the disc itself. The cost of the media we recommend many times is cheaper than that you are buying now.
cheers,
Pete

Thank you ScubaPete, feels welcome to be aboard!
Things seem to be a lot clearer to me now. I just needed all these facts gathered in one answer, to draw my conclusions.
Buying Ritek media and a memory expansion of 256 mb ram and will post the results.

Your media is fine :)
Did this happen with 1 DVD or more than 1 ?
Try to reAuthor and backup your movie only -

I will be buying Verbatim this evening. I also wanted to know that if I update my firmware will that help in anyway to get my DVD Burner to recongnize the DVD it just finished Burning. After reading this forum I realize I made a mistake buying Memorex, but is there anyway possible I can get them to work for a movie backup. The strange thing is Nero will burn the DVD successfully, but I can't read it in the same drive that it was burned in.

This is called cross posting, against forum rules -
Think of how utterly stupid I feel answering your exact question in another thread - my time means nothing to you BUT it's precious to me - Stop "Playing" people, we don't like it - and you're not going to make any friends here doing it -
LISTEN UP - the above question shouldn't be answered here unless you like being "Played" too -
