Everyone's always praising the Ritek G04s (Grade A), but what's the consensus on the G05? Is it as reliable or did they switch to a cheaper dye or something like that?

I don't think many people have bothered with the GO5.
Most people, like myself, have the Pioneer 107 with the hacked firmware which will write to any disc at 8Xspeed. It makes the extra expense of the 8XSpeed discs 'unnecesary'.
(I'm never sure how to spell that word)

That is true; however, many experts do not recommend "overburning" such discs as it has been shown to significantly diminish the life of the disc. I just want to know if G05s are good media, verified by people like you and me, that's all.

point taken nanamula,
In my opinion if it's made by Ritek it's bound to be good.
Do I sound like a Ritek fan?

I also have a Pioneer 107. I updated my firmware from Pioneer, but I only can burn at 4X. Where did you find your hacked firmwar, is it safe to download and isntall?. Since you have Pioneer 107, have you heard any news regarding a Firmware that will let you burn the new 8G disks.

there is a link to the hacked firmware on this site somewhere. I'll just eat my tea first then I'll go and find it.

A very fine member here, GrandpaBW, has been using the G05s in his Plextor PX-708A with excellent results :)

This is the link to the pioneer hacked firmware page,
http://flashman.rpc1.org/Firmware/PIONEER/DVR-107D/DVR107D_STANDARD/PATCHED/

I used the one dated 30th April 2004 just after it came out. It's the one with the Flashdvr.zip.
Istalled easily enough and burns everything at 8XSpeed if you let it.
I did have to change the target destination in 'properties' though, as it wanted to update drive G: and my 107 is drive E:
