Lady walks into Apple glass door, sues for $1 million

article published on 26 March, 2012

In what is likely one of the more ridiculous stories you'll read today, an 83-year-old grandma is suing Apple after she walked right into the famous all-glass doors of a Manhasset-area Apple Store. Evelyn Paswall, a former VP at a fur-company in Manahattan, smashed her face into the glass door of the Long Island location after she failed to see the doors there. Reads a statement from ... [ read the full article ]

LoL...how dare they have glass doors!?!? Don't they know the kind of people who buy iPhones spend all their time looking down, not paying attention to anything? They should put warnings on the sidewalk..."Warning...building ahead".

BTW...how did she ever live to be 83 with grandchildren? Darwin is spinning in his grave.

Any responsible organisation will have some kind of design so that a glass door/wall could be noticed. This is an accessibility issue above all. Anyone with any sort of vision disability might be unable to realise that a barrier stands in their way.

In comparison to Apple's lawsuits against the world, I call this one pretty fair. Or equally anyways.

I hope all she gets is her hospital bill paid for and maybe a bit for pain and suffering. 1 million is way to much, just makes her look like she did it on purpose to get a million dollar check. Well it looks that way to me anyway. I am all for someone suing, but only when it's appropriate and for the appropriate amount. Walking into some glass doors and breaking your nose does not fit into you getting 1 million in damages. It happens all the time with glass doors, I am sure anyone that has owned those glass patio doors knows what I am talking about.

Of course. And blind people can't see it at all. Yet they learn to get by.

Is there a building left on the planet that doesn't have doors? I guess she thought the etched "apple" logo was just a cataract floating around in her eye. I'd like to make the analogy that she'd sue the inventor of the toilet bowl because she doesn't look for the seat to be down and falls in but South Park beat me to it...maybe she'll sue McDonalds for serving "hot" coffee?...nope, too late with that one too. Hmmmmm, sue the inventor of the fork for making it such a dangerous eating utensil? Is it too late to sue her parents for not having an abortion or the Trojan company for not having invented condoms soon enough?
Can Apple counter-sue her for being a dumb ass? Is her leaving blood on the door an act of vandalism like grafitti or an act of bio-chemical terrorism. Her stupidity can be considered a blood born pathogen and can/has obviously infected a large part of the population.

i feel sorry for the old lady if she honestly didnt see it and broke her nose walking into it, but im also thinking its a scam to get money.i havnt see a glass apple building so im not sure how visible they are.apple could give her the 1million and it wouldnt be a massive loss to them but it would also encourage stupid lawsuits.

I hope she wins...and I can see the virtue to her argument. If she was younger than 83 I'd call bullshit, but elderly women don't usually break their own bones for monetary gain.

Apple may as well just give her the money...they won't even feel it disappear.

Have you read the warnings on a toothpick wrapper lately? They are there because of a lawsuit. If people can't be counted on not to stick a toothpick into their eyes, they can't be counted on for anything.

I hate apple, but I still hope they win this one...and I hope the judge commits this old bag to a home. At the very least, I hope they take away her driver's license. Oh wait...South Park beat me to that one.

Entitlement, stupidity, the legal lottery... all of it can kiss my ass!!! The old bat managed to find her way in the damned place, make a purchase & then wants a lawsuit on the way out!?! Pound sand I say.

If it weren't for the fact she was female & didn't have to think (or basically move) she probably had 2 kids before she knew what was causing them. How the hell has she survived in New York in the first place for 85 years (if that's how long she lived there)?

I'd like to know how many other folks have donked their faces into the doors making their way out after having not payed attention as well & NOT managed to sue Apple over their incident as well.

This is BS. Pay for her nose, pay for a tank of gas in the car & drive her ass to the 'home'. Even if she does win a cool mill, it'll just be another excuse for Apple to raise their prices another $50.

Everyone knows I'm not a fan of Apple, but the legal lottery crap far exceeds the need to wipe out stupid across the planet.

1 million is too much but the claim is valid. A boy ran into a glass door where i work. He needed plastic surgery. The claim was that we did not put any warning signs on the door. We paid for the surgery.

I dont know what it looks like outside the apple store, but they should put barricades around the building with the exception of the entrance. Is there a sign anywhere saying where the entrance is?

We have tiles that look good but when it rains they become really slippery. Someone slipped. Is it our fault that it rained? No. but design should always have safety in mind.
Its an issue of aesthetics vs safety. I looked at the picture about and only realized where the entrance was after about 10 seconds.

You can say its an idiotic thing to do but it can happen to you.
