Encyclopedia Britannica sees sales boost after discontinuation of print books

article published on 6 April, 2012

Just a couple of weeks after Encyclopaedia Britannica decided to discontinue its print editions, the company was overwhelmed by orders of the final edition of the set. The company says it is down to just 800 copies left, despite the set's $1395 price tag. Says a company spokesman: "The size and duration of the spike has been a little bit stronger than we expected. It's funny how the world thinks when something is about to be gone forever: printed edition flying off the shelf and the price tag close to $1400! Wow! Guess people need printed words these days after all. :)

All they want to do is use the last set as though they were Precious Moments or any other tchotchke... they've become a collectors item of a bygone era. Some of these idiots probably think they'll be of profuse value in 20 years to put their kids through college or a new down payment on a condo in Miami.

It'll be displayed next to a rotary phone & an 8-track player as well so younger snobs that frequent the cocktail parties can point garishly at the items & ask idiotically & snobbishly, "what are those?"

I have a printed set of the World Book Encyclopedia from 1955 that my family picked up used when I was growing up. It's an interesting snapshot of the world from that period and shows how much the world has changed in so many ways since then.

I hope the online edition of the Britannica keeps old articles around from years past. It's a very quick and easy way to get a glimpse into how the world was.
