i just bought a dvd burner and it came with a program called "Sonic my DVD"

i have an .avi file which is 715MB but when i upload it to sonic my DVD it grows to around 4.9 GB!!!

iam guessing that its because the file was compressed with a codec, am I right? if iam not plz tell me whats wrong with this and plz if theres some way of compressing movies for a DVD tell me i really need to get this movie onto a DVD (to watch on tv not to store it)
