IDC: Apple controls the tablet market and it isn't even close

article published on 4 August, 2012

Apple shipped 17 million tablets in the Q2, crushing the competition, says IDC. The company finished with a 68.2 percent market share, although Asus and Samsung saw significant jumps, as well. Total shipments for the quarter reached 25 million, up from 18.7 million last quarter. "Apple built upon its strong March iPad launch and ended the quarter with its best-ever shipment total ... [ read the full article ]

It really isn't because ipad is the best tablet though. I was on my ipad and I glanced up at another tablet on the subway. This other guy put away his ipad and went up to this guy and was like, that tablet looks awesome, what is it? Blackberry Playbook. Who would have thought? Honestly I like the texture on the back of the playbook, the clean corners, perfect size, and (at a quick glance) smooth UI.

The thing Apple needs to do is get OSX on there tablets. An iPad is great but it's limited running on there iOS. That would make them worth the money since it could do pretty much anything. If I was Apple I would make it dual boot with iOS and OSX. I doubt they would do that because I am betting that as soon as they would, sales would plummet on all of there notebook lines.

Who the f*k is the IDC & what kind of imbecilic statement is "Apple controls the tablet market and it isn't even close"? Unless this a practice in Romney-esque instant nullifying statements, the IDC is on the take for Apple...

From what it looks like everybody is doing pretty good. Especially Samsung & Asus! So NO, Apple isn't crushing anyone. They just seem to be holding the course. Which is more than can be expected from anyone.

Just because you hate Apple doesn't mean everyone should be catering to that opinion (or that reasonable statements are evil because they don't agree with you).

I don't even think it has anything to do with hate or love towards crApple. Is just the common sense and obvious truth.

Man, that's a first. I've never been accused of being an Apple fanboy, ha. No bias in the article, as written. Apple seeing 80 percent growth on 17 million is infinitely more impressive than 100 percent growth on 1 million. Sorry, but that is truth.

Thank you for your input cyprusrom & as always, xnonsuchx is constantly on the Hunt for "Russ' Red Swollen Colon" for something tangible rather than actually coming full circle & commenting back onto the target of the article.

He'd rather target an individual's ability to opine than to formulate a coherent, quantifiable sentence regarding the article all in lieu of putting me in my corner . So I redundantly alert him again to Rule #11 & monotonously inform him to either add to the discussion or squirm silently in his ineptitude.

Might I add that statistics are a fickle game? Apple already has a lion's share of the market. So to say 84% growth of a traditional (we'll call it) 60% "over all" domination of the 'entire' tablet market, only sets them up for a proposed jump of 2.3% increase in the overall standing of said market. I.e., isn't it already easy to make your 80% off of a 17 mill ownership? I vote yes.

Not quite the stomping the IDC would have us to believe & easily fleeting. I.e., one natural disaster, war or another financial SNAFU & Apple takes a dump off that pedestal like everybody else.

I would add as Samsung themselves were at the EXACT same growth THIS quarter as Apple (84% - 118% OVERALL). Proposing that Samsung ended with indeed a much better standing than Apple. I.e., the smaller you are the harder you have to work to make a bigger splash. Not to mention, they're the ones making all the screens these days & they aren't playing well with Apple. Can you say price hike next quarter?

Samsung certainly doesn't have 'control' of anything per se', but they certainly have more bragging rights.

You know, that would be very interesting... I wouldn't mind seeing that, just to either prove/disprove some of my argument as well.

That's rich! As though you've shown much capability "to formulate a coherent, quantifiable sentence"???

"I hate Apple and anything that doesn't support that must be a lie or from someone who's stupid" is the gist of most of your arguments and you feel the need to re-express that on just about every Apple-related article here.

Maybe "controls" is the wrong word for this article, but I've often heard the word used in place of "dominates" w/o it being some inherently heavily biased thing.

And for what it's worth, I'm a PC guy and I don't carry an iPhone around or own any tablet device.

Out of the mouths of babes... And we still return to childish, tit for tat, flame wars.

If you have to repeat, or use my tactics, you have already lost. Using semantics in an attempt to win the king pissant crown of Right Mountain is low even for you. We 'have' been through this before.

Follow the rules as I have described, oh so tiresomely, time & time before or feel the wrath that will have the both of us exiled from the hallowed halls of this fine forum, for you ADD NOTHING.

If you're attempt to be topical, but woeful play with semantics, between control & domination was supposed to mean anything...? You were obviously lost on my subject at hand & bent on seeing me wallow in some kind of pitiful fact faux pa.

I would be a moron to state that anyone other than Apple had 'control' of the market. While you may have a new found fascination with the thesaurus, you had best serve your time getting to re-aquatint yourself with the dictionary again.

Domination, is a term meant to deal with IMMEDIACY. Like the here & now. NOT something Apple is commanding a the IDC would have us to believe. Samsung & Asus are seeming to 'sway' a bit (but not congruently) into the definition of domination. Thus, I deem you, once and again, wrong.

Control, seems to be a bit more fitting. And, my Apple addressing fanboy, I have in my round about way, already stated that they are still indeed in control of the market. But at what "I" consider to be a fragile one. Which is opinion that leaves you outside & of little of my concern.

heres a thought which might explain why apple has higher shipments. They are marketting the ipad at schools and kids as young as 4 as a device to help them learn to read and write. 1 school gets the ipad every school wants them so they can keep up with the jones's. The government is buying them in bulk at way below retail cost and sending them to schools.

Btw i didnt have an ipad to teach me how to read and write i had family that taught me and look how shocking my typing is.

Your arguments are worthy of a ridiculous conspiracy theorist. :-)

Looking at the numbers, the article and title are spot on. Apple is dominating the market and it's not even close. Numbers don't lie. It's okay for people to hate Apple if they want but give credit where credit is due.

80% growth on 9 million is infinitely more impressive than 110% growth on 1 million.

Wasn't apple dominating the smartphone about 2 years ago? Slowly but surely, things will change

And if you'll look at the whole scheme of things (and my entire comments) dominating might not be the proper word for it. Those leaps & bounds that 'dominate' tend to incur aren't following Apple like they used to. I.e., Apple's "overall" picture is slowing down.

So yes, playing the math game, you do get more money off 80% from 9 mill than you do from 110% off 1 mill. Cute slight of hand, but nasty cheap parlor stunt. That's like throwing a screeching cat onto the set & turning the sound up all the way of cheap ass horror movie in lieu of actually building tension.

You are someone who has never been in sales, so to see an effort of this kind is probably lost. But growth means selling more than replacing your stock. So that 84% of Apple that got sold? That means that 16% of their stock is still waiting to be sold BEFORE they actually break even & start making money. That's how this works.

Samsung is already 10% ahead. So for all intents & purposes, they're in the black already.

Now, it's not all hate. Apple will make theirs, but just like i1der said, Apple had the smartphone market 2 years ago. And while they may have a big share, it isn't what it used to be. Therefore, I stand by my statements.
