R.I.P Flash on Android

article published on 15 August, 2012

Adobe has officially pulled its official Flash Player plug-in from the Google Play Store. The decision, which was announced earlier in the summer, followed the company's decision to halt development of the software for mobile devices, in general. Adobe was clear to note that the mobile decision will not affect the Flash player for PCs, or Air, which lets developers turn normally web-based ... [ read the full article ]

Flash has to be one of the worse programs for allowing hackers compromise a machine and allow remote code execution. While working for a company which from where our testing showed there were security holes that would allow hackers to take control they told us to take a long walk on a short pier. They weren't concerned in the least to fix there software bugs.

The only thing apple did right on the mobile world was use html 5 over flash witch is much better but on the other hand flash is faster and has more bugs. i'm happy with 4.1.1 jelly bean on my samsung galaxy nexus its so fast and lot of root rooms are very good with goomanager to update your roms with out having to reroot your phone.

Could be the whole reason why damned Youtube doesn't run on ICS as it is. I say 'good riddance' as well.

1.) Limiting features is not a good thing...giving people the option to use features (even if not necessarily good features) is a good thing. Blocking features before the alternatives are even partially in place is a really bad thing...the kind of thing that you only see from the kind of control freak who refuses to let doctors remove cancer because he thinks he can cure it himself with good eating.

2.) Steve only blocked flash to help sell iTunes crap.

3.) Flash does not come pre-installed on any Android device that I know of...if you don't want it, DON'T INSTALL IT!!! You might as well say, "Finally, they killed that scientific calculator app I never used; good riddance!"

4.) Adobe is killing Flash because the market is saturated. They only provide the clients in order to sell the development software, and they have sold it to just about anyone who will buy it. Between free Flash encoders, free (and commercial) HTML5 encoders, and free Java encoders, Adobe Flash Encoder is really only being used by those who already have it. Therefor, they are trying to kill it to force people to upgrade to their newer HTML5 encoder, in the hopes that people will actually pay for their software when there are free alternatives.

5.) Youtube went HTML5 long ago (not before Steve went all control-freak, but still, long ago), Flash has nothing to do with the ICS YouTube issues.

Does flash suck? YES.
Is it safe to use, even on Linux-based operating systems? NO.
Do I want the option to use it, so that I can still make use of the few sites that still have not gone HTML5 except on their crummy "mobile" versions that only have 5% of the content? YES.

Gotta go with everything you said there KB... I didn't exactly want to sound like the village idiot spouting off with redundant diatribes of everyone else's quotes between mouth fulls of sod & horse shit as I got pulled along with the band wagon...

Frankly, I'm always one for innovation, I just hate it when a particular site is roped to one technology (like my YouTube blathering) & it's inability to work with one particular product - this case, my tablet.

Seeing as the tablet is still new frontier for me, I'm fumbling around like William Hurt beating himself against the walls in Altered States rather tip toeing through tulips. But I do have to complain that A LOT of content on YouTube is still formatted in FLV (yes, yes, it's a container, but some devices are just as idiotic as the makers). The SITE is fine, just not the video content.

Other than that, I've always argued that Stevie-boo-boo was out for world domination.

So I take it you have learned how to cure pancreatic cancer then? Please share with the rest of the world so we can learn how to remove it and put an end to this incurable disease.

That seems a bit hateful... I mean, yeah, so KB didn't care for Steve's choice for cancer treatments. Why the venom & the juxtaposition that KB remotely hinted toward having the irrefutable "cure-all"? Where'd that come from?

That statement kind of feels like one you of those intended as a comment reserved for a trolling moronic newbie who refuses to stay on topic...

I mean I live in an area where people still believe that their faith will heal their kids of diseases, but are hypocritical enough to go to the hospital to get sewn up if cut deeply enough.

I'm not putting words in anyone's mouth here, but I my take on Steve Jobs is that he's just as hypocritical. He spent 30+ years touting all that is uber techno future, but refused anything medically forward thinking in order to save his own ass.

Notwithstanding, other than his timely death, this article has nothing to immediately do with him & more to do with the death of Flash; which I'm assuming is good thing as it's a technology that's seen its time come & go.

ADOBE'S response - We didn't hear Youtube and Porn watchers complain back in the day.

Flash completly changed the way people thought of and used the internet such as games and snazzy interactive websites. Thanks to Flash, things have improved and the web has evolved hence HTML5.
Flash is not the best now but credit where credit is due.

What exactly dose this have to do with flash?

As for the flash, I personally stop using it as soon as Chrome for Android was in beta. So no big loss.

I agree with you 100%. Even though bandwidth is pretty fast (excluding the rest of the world), all Flash does is add another network attack vector just make a web site "flashy". (Excuse the pun). HTML has progressed to the point were good looking and functional web sites can be created, that will be displayed on any browser that properly supports the current HTML standard.
