dvd shrinking reduces quality?

Im trying to backup one of my dvds to use in another dvd player in my house and Im using dvd shrink. If I was to REAUTHOR the dvd and include only the main video, will I get much better quality then backuping up the full video, with menus and features and all that?
I know the extra features are pretty pointless but itd be nice to have them if I wasnt scraficing video quality.

LOL ... One thing about re-authoring w/ DVD Shrink is you lose the menu function. If you've got Nero, use Recode 2 to re-author(it retains all menu functions).

I only take the main movie, as the DVD standalone player allows me to move through chapters as well as FF and REV.

ooooh flip, did you just recommend recode over shrink?
fidrake, you can always leave in some extras after re-authoring and raise compression on them, thus lowering compression on the main movie. Quality will stay up on your movie and you'll end up with both( quality on extras will be down, but who cares?)

Ahh I see what you mean. I figured who watches the extra stuff anyway and by reauthoring it, you dont have to watch all that FBI stuff and warnings. My dvd player still lets me move between chapters. I think Ill do it this way from now on.

Each to his own. I like some extras, like alternate endings, deleted scenes, and outtakes. I also like having a menu to navigate. I can take out all the other stuff I don't want, change compression, and still have a great pic for the movie! good luck....

Oh, for Pete's sake. We make back ups so that we don't ruin the original by handling it that much (or the children).
Just back-up the main movie & watch it. If we really want to watch the other stuff, we have the original disk, right?

Oh Im so terribly sorry to have angered you...
Id be glad to back up the whole movie but I have a collection of 200+ dvds and will be backing up a majority to keep at our house on the lake (2 hours away). I dont want to start making copies to find out they are bad quality and I dont want also miss out on the extra features.

drake, there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to make a quality back up. I spend hours on it. Half the job in getting there is the fun of the damn thing.
I labor hours over them, and everybody can tailor make their copies to suit them. I have tons of software apps , burners, extra HD's, the list goes on. All dedicated to video production.
Frankly buik, if I don't mind answering, why should you ? The forum is here to help, if you don't want to, fine. Don't bitch at someone else because they do!

I burned a back up of Arther(an old movie), with shrink,then decrypter. I tryed the compression settings knocking of unwanted audio tracks ,still didn't lower compression ratio. burned movie very dark. Any ideas for better vidio.

the quality was 7.5 the copy 5. THe copy was alot darker. same thing happen with wall street, igg Dvd is 4,388,000,000 bytes should i just uses decrypter, or shrink then decrypter.

Try using just decrypter, remember to rip in ISO, then burn with decrypter. That way we narrow down where the problem is. You can't go over 4.37, I'm afraid you'll be a little over.
Have you tried anything else but shrink?
Just thought of something else, did you try to use your brightness and contrast controls on playback?

f1drake, No, you did not anger me. I was not targeting anyone.
bigorange, I was not bitching at people who wanted help or those who want to get the best quality. I'm all for best quality possible. I am not trying to offend people & make enemies. I will certainly defer to you, and others, on many issues regarding the making of quality back ups.
I apoligize to you both.
DVD Shrink is a good program. That's the software mentioned in the original post. OK, let's guide another user towards getting the best result they can with the program they are currently using. No problem hinting that they can get a better product using other programs. But stick to what the requestor has at their disposal and is asking about.
Yes, re-authoring is usually the route to take using DVD Shrink. With that you can strip out language files that you don't understand. Depending on your audio play-back set up, know what to keep. You can strip out the extras or leave them. Same with the menu. You can also edit start frames. Why watch the studio logo? Don't care for the rolling credits at the end? Strip them out also.

Glad you are still with us. There is a wealth of info & experience at Afterdawn. We can get off on a tangent tho (just vist "Safety Valve")
Everyone starts off as a rookie. None of were born as fully functioning computer whizzes.
Your blank media is a good start. The amount of time you are willing to spend making your back-ups is a factor. I wish I had all the hardware & software that bigorange has. If I did, probably wouldn't matter. There is the "Wife Factor".

If you ever try DVD Rebuilder w/ CCE Basic(awesome IMO, when backing up long movies), do it while you sleep. The process, once rebuilding starts is around 2 hours. And I think Big O bribes his wife :)
