Motorola unveils their first Intel-powered Android phone

article published on 19 September, 2012

Motorola has unveiled their first Intel-powered Android phone this week, the RAZR i. The phone is almost identical to their recently revealed RAZR M, except that it is running on a new powerful Intel chip instead of an ARM-based equivalent. RAZR i phones will have a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen with Gorilla Glass 2, run on Android 4.0.4, and feature the same Kevlar trim of Motorola's new devices. ... [ read the full article ]

Very interesting. I can't wait to see benchmarks.

Neet...I hope they do well in the benchmarks, under 1/3 the clock of the competition but intel has pulled off better performance than faster amd chips and there is something to be said about a faster clock on fewer cores when it comes to poorly written code, so we will see I guess.

I would be interested if they make a stripped version of windows, or even windows xp for this.

Er, what? 2 GHz isn't a third of any current phone's clock speed. Or are you referring to their desktop CPUs..? Even there, i5s and i7s have just about the same clock speed range as the closest AMD competitors.

Edit --> Since it runs an Atom CPU, it IS possible that someone could root this puppy and install some form of Windows, if they were masochistic.

No need for a stripped down version. There will be several Atom powered Windows 8 tablets launching with the OS. Most of them will be more recent (and therefore more powerful) versions than this but the Medfield chip used in this phone may appear in some of the low end models for the same reason it's being used here. It's the first SoC (System on a Chip) version.

Now obviously you would still need device drivers, but that's where using Atom is an advantage over ARM since they're all made by a single manufacturer and therefore include a common set of hardware. You still might run into problems with other components, but I'm not familiar enough with the similarities and differences between Atom phone and tablet designs to offer anything more than a completely uninformed speculation on that front. Sort of like an educated guess minus the educated part ;)

Meanwhile, I'm reading this on my 2.1GHz laptop... I'm really starting to feel under-equipped, especially for a CSE major. I think it's time to pinmod and overclock.
