Mapping the mobile landscape: What's growing on the Apple tree?

article published on 21 September, 2012

The end of the year is drawing closer, accompanied as always by the Christmas shopping season. In addition to the millions of tablets and smartphones being sold this also means a bumper crop of the latest devices from the biggest names in mobile computing. The iPhone 5 has already seen record preorders and Amazon began shipping two new 7-inch tablets last week with the 8.9-inch Kindle ... [ read the full article ]

I think I would have gone a little harsher on some of their more overbearing business practices. Things like there attempt to enforce a design patent on rectangular electronic device with rounded corners. This might be a legal option but it is truly ridiculous. I am amazed the courts are even considering it.
Apple also has used their control of the app store to keep out competition. One example is it took them 12 months to approve Google Voice app.

You could also look into the way Apple has tried to force Amazon to pay 30% of all its book sales to them even though Amazon has its own store to handle the transactions.

There is a lot of anti-competitive Behavior that Apple practices that in the end only allows them to charge a much higher price to the consumer.

To sum it all up apple has done the imposable in only a few years they managed to go from a company with a good image to looking worse than Microsoft.

Well I certainly won't disagree from a personal point of view. But beyond raising prices for everybody to pay the lawyers I'm torn on what affect it has on the market as a whole.

Clearly a lot of people find that behavior offensive and others are equally rabid about defending Apple from all the Android "thieves." Most people don't even seem to understand what's going on and we still have no idea where all the legal thuggery is going to take us in the end.

I considered going into that kind of detail but I might not be done writing today if I had ;)

And this is a perfect example. It's not that Apple did that to Amazon. They do it to everyone. All in-app purchases must go through Apple.

I do know this. I had a first gen iPod Touch which was a very good device that I would have considered great if Apple hadn't gotten in the way. Even before all their legal attacks my standard response when someone asked me if they should buy an iPhone was the following. They're great devices with lots of potential and I would absolutely never consider buying one because Apple prevents them from reaching it.

Apple devices' locked-down, controlled paradigm is not for me and many. Apple touts they have more apps. But as lamain said apps that threaten Apple's "core" business either are not allowed in App Store or watered down, e.g. Google Maps got booted. Look at Google's many amazing apps that work so much better on Android OS. Google Voice on Android integrates directly with the Android phone app, all in the background. You don't need to use the Google Voice app to make your phone calls which you need to in iOS, so cloogy. Google docs on Android gives you full editing capability not on iOS, another example. Is it Google or Apple at fault here? Does Google control 3rd party app in Andorid like Apple on iOS? Well at least you can side-load any app you want on Android without rooting (equivalent to jailbreaking on iOS). I just can't stand Apple's way. iOS is just not for me and many others who want to decide for themselves.
