Hello,

I have compiled many DVD-R's from home movies, video captures, etc, and have found they all work on my standalone DVD player. However, when I try to play them on other peoples standalone DVD players I get mixed results. Some play with random errors including jumps, skips, scrambled audio/video while some don't read the discs at all. Is there a way to guarantee a working DVD-R for all standalone players?

Here's what I am currently using:

TMPGenc - to convert captures to DVD compliant format.
TMPGenc DVD Author - to compile DVD with menus.
RecordNow MAX - to burn DVD.
Ritek DVD-R G04 - DVD blanks discs.
Pioneer DV-466 - standalone player.

It sounds like you're doing things right. I don't use TMGEnc encoder or DVD Author personally, but I haven't seen anything about them that would indicate any problems with creating standards compliant DVDs. I do use RecordNow Max and Ritek G04 media, and I've never had problems (that weren't caused by the player) with either of those. The only thing I might add to your process is to use a program called Mark's Tray DVD Player that's designed to completely emulate a standards compliant DVD player. You can download it from this link:

There's a feature called IFO Analyzer that has a tab to show you potential errors. The button for IFO Analyzer is at the bottom of the screen.

There's really no way to guarantee good playback, because it's often a case of the player not liking recordable media, or at least not liking the type you're using. Some players will react better to +R or -R even though they're designed to read both.
