can, avi,mpg files be played directly into dvd players??

or does it need to be converted into special dvd format first?

and does converting take a long time??

Yes, with NeroVision or TMPGEnc.

It depends on your system, anywhere from 2-3 hours and beyond :)

I don't think that most do, but I have an Audiovox portable dvd player that will. It plays most mpgs without rendering or encoding. Took mpgs from my computer and burned them onto a data CD and it worked. I think the model is D1730.

There are some Chinese DVD players that can play regular MPEG files, but most players won't. Some DVD players can play AVI files that are encoded with an MPEG-4 codec like Divx or Xvid, but once again most can't. As Nephilim said, the time required to convert is dependent on your system, as well as what encoder you use. For the best speed (and high quality) you can get CCE Basic ($58), but if you want to do a lot of encoding you should make sure you have fast enough hardware to do it first.
