Xbox 360 reaches 70 million units sold

article published on 21 October, 2012

Microsoft has sold 70 million Xbox 360, a strong milestone for the aging console. The console launched in November 2005, a year ahead of the rival Sony PlayStation 3. At 70 million, Microsoft will have the eight best selling console of all-time, just ahead of the PS3 at 64 million and just behind the PSP at 74 million. Sony's PlayStation 2 remains the leader (likely of all-time unless ... [ read the full article ]

The video game industry itself has been struggling of late, with a downtrend in sales that has not let up for almost a year.

Current new game prices definitely aren't showing any kinds of struggle...

We purchased two xbox 360 consoles, one that was rarely used, and another that my boys used quit a bit. The one that they used failed about 3 months before Microsofts extended warranty and they fixed it for free. The one that I used on occasion to play with them, but was mostly used for Netflix failed about 2 months after the warranty had expired- rrod also. We just have the 360 that they use now, and we won't be getting another, 100% failure rate is absolutely ridiculous. I'm not saying my experience is typical by any means, but how many other people did this happen to that had too much invested in games and ended up buying multiple consoles?
From a consumers standpoint, just selling 70 million consoles isn't a very good indicator of a products success. It's obvious Microsoft is less concerned with reliability, and more concerned with volume, but they will no longer be getting my business. I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers, and am probably in the minority overall, but I found it unacceptable.

Amen JOG. I've been through about eight consoles. M$ denied there was a problem for a long time before extending their warranty. They can take their next edition console and stick it. I wish consumers were smart enough to band together and boycott all entertainment companies that look to screw there customers.

Agreed. If you read the EULA they make you agree to, to use "YOUR" console, the consumer basically gives up any right to go after them legally, as in class action status. That in itself should be illegal. Hopefully I didn't get too off track, but when I see a company touting how much junk it's able to push on consumers, it gets under my skin. Like you, there will be no more new xbox consoles in this house. Unfortunately, people that do spend a lot of time playing games will probably keep ponying up, and just deal with what they get.

8th highest selling isnt great.then if you take into consideration the amount they have failed due to rrod.its estimated that 20-60% fail due to rrod.its estimated 3500000-12000000 xbox 360s have failed possibly more.be interesting to see what the top 7 consoles are.also be interesting if they had the stats for how many of each consoles are in working condition.

custom built gaming pc from early 2010,ps2 with 15 games all original,ps3 500gbs with 5 games all original, yamaha amp and 5.1channel surround sound speakers,46inch sony lcd smart tv.

S'funny, personal experience and all that, eh?

I had a 60gb Falcon Pro and sold it on when I got a deal on a 120gb Falcon Elite, I sold that one on when later I got a deal on a 250gb Jasper Super Elite and sold it on when the current 250gb Slim came along.

None of them ever gave me or the subsequent owners a moment of trouble.

Most of the issues related to the early Xenon mobo ones from what I can tell.

Last I heard the 250/320gb Slim is as reliable as a PS3 slim (which I also have) and even they have their own YLOD issue.

I'd be interested in the failure rate numbers of the Xbox 360 as well. Pulling time at a pawn shop, I've seen at least 18 to 1 Xbox over PS3 failures come in for repairs. Primarily due to Red Ring.

Given that the new Jasper board has come out & the hour glass model has taken over I've only heard of one of those machines failing & believe that was due to power fluctuations in the home.

But there for a while, I had a steady stream of post warranty 360s coming in for RROD repairs.
