Unlocked iPhones now available in U.S.

article published on 2 December, 2012

Apple has made its iPhone 5 available, unlocked, in the U.S. The off-contract device will start at $650, and will include LTE for AT&T and Canadian carriers like Bell and Rogers. Additionally, the phone will work on GSM HSPA+ everywhere. At its most expensive, the phone will cost $849 for 64GB. Just like its carrier subsidized brothers, the iPhone will be available in black and white. [ read the full article ]

Sounds like an iScam. It's funny that there are actually people dumb enough to pay $649 for the base model.

I fail to see how this qualifies as any sort of scam whatsoever. You'll find the same offerings from the major carriers if you log on to their websites, select an iPhone, and choose "month to month price". Selling a phone off contract is nothing new, and having the iPhone carrier unlocked directly from Apple allows consumers freedom in choosing their wireless providers. Hell, even if you buy a phone at an off-contract price chances are it's not gonna be unlocked. I'm no Apple fanboy (I rock Android myself), but I'm sure this will be good news for a lot of people who were on the fence about buying an iPhone due to carrier restrictions.

The iScam comment was meant as sarcasm; and like I said, I'm quite sure there will be people who are willing to dump $650 on an iphone. To each their own...

To me getting a phone with one or two year outdated materials and then putting a 40% markup on the phone is absolutely ridiculous. This is why I'll never own an iPhone now or in the future as their asking waaay to much for these phones...

100 bucks to up memory by 16GB is absurd! Almost equally as absurd is 100 bucks to double THAT by 32GB.

I just don't understand the fascination with IPones.....it's like eating vanilla ice cream over and over and over again.

Oh......and for all those that say Apple products "just work".......explain that to one of my end users that had an IPad just hang, and needing to be powered down completely just to reacquire a wi-fi signal and download an update.

Microsdhc Class 10 cards are 30 bucks and less.
