Woman tasered for trying to buy too many iPhones

article published on 14 December, 2012

According to reports, a woman was tasered at an Apple Store in Newton, Massachusetts last week. Xiaojie Li allegedly bought two iPhones last week at the store. Later in the week she went back to purchase two more, looking to buy the smartphones for her family back in China. The Apple Store employees refused to sell her the last two, saying they didn't want the devices going into the black market. ... [ read the full article ]

This is just a horrible story. Police acting terrible thinking they are justified. As usual. And surprisingly Apple, who wants to make their phones the only choice for consumers yet refuse to sell them to a lady due to assumptions from God knows where they they will end up on the Black Market.

I hate the Police and I hate Apple.

This is a fine example of the rampant police abuses that have plagued my country since 9/11.

Astounding! Now Apple wants to control what a purchaser does with a retail product. Bad enough they rip-off the consumer at every opportunity, now one is guaranteed a shocking experience with an I-phone.

And bleep the police state torturers. My lightning strike their penii, if these p-poor LEOS can find one amongst themselves.

Our tax dollars at work.

Honestly, i think she's full of shit saying she doesn't speak english. And even if she doesn't, if a cop grabs you from the arm (no matter what country or what language you don't speak) and point you to the door, you fucking leave. It may not be right but its better than getting tasered in the face.

Li-Harious!

More stupid people could use a good tasering (as long as it doesn't kill them...that's going a little TOO far).

Sounds like you need a good tasering then, you're not TOO bright. There was obviously a language barrier.
Two grown men having to taser a little chinese woman to get her out of the store? Really?
I guess she didn't exhibit the sheep mentality right away, so she must have been trouble. Bad things can and will happen if you get out of the fluffy velvet rope corral.

i dont agree with tazers.what kinda insane people invents a device to electricute and hurt people.
cops are heavy handed everywhere just do a search of youtube you will see it for yourself.
she probably understand enough english to know to leave the store but she probably wanted a reason as to why she was being asked to leave.
if someone is selling an item and someone has the money to buy it once its out of the sellers hand they shouldnt be able to dictate where it ends up unless they have an agreement between the seller and buyer before the sale is final.she had the cash to buy the phones and personally think she should be suing the store for discrimination.

And YOU'RE so bright you can make up BS details out of nothing??? You seem to harbor irrational hate for Apple and/or cops and you're just spewing nonsense because of it.

Ya no, Apple (business practices) and police (not all police) members have done a lot of wrongdoing over the decades. Stop acting like they can't do no wrong which they clearly have in this woman's case.

I think it's very weird that apple watchdog's what you do with their devices. Apparently this "refusal policy" is a company wide stance and not the first time it's been in the news (see link below). If you say the product is going to an "unauthorized" country they won't sell it to you. But, what I don't understand in this situation, is why they won't sell the phones, China has the iPhone so it's going to an apple "market" country. Unless, as a company, they don't want people to undercut the cost of the phone by buying here and giving away or selling in China.

Send her back to China. Either follow the rules or face the consequences. If someone did this in china they would be sent to prison or escorted to the airport and deported. I have no sympathy for her. I am so tired of people coming her and then they want to do anything they want and when someone says follow our rules they complain. All companies have rules on the purchase of their products. Apple can set the rules and stop grey market purchases it is their product. Send her back and remove her green card she doesn't deserve one or to be here!!!

I bet the company you work for has rules. This woman needs to follow Apples rules on purchases. She needs to learn English since she has been here for 3 years. Now she will sue and get something for free costing all of us. Go to China and try this! You will be sent to prison or escorted to the airport and deported. The police were a little rough but if she was not cooperating she deserved to get tased. Ship her out we don't need someone like this sponging off us in the USA.

Lets see. The edited by ddp came to the USA and lived here for 3 years and cannot speak English. Apple has rules on buying and selling grey market phones. That is ok they make the product and can do what they want with it. So I suggest you go over and help this woman learn English, get her a lawyer so she can sue and get something for free from all of us, and help her keep her green card and take your job in the future. Yea that will work.

So many things wrong here...Apple is in the wrong for trying to limit what people do with the devices they buy (it isn't Heroin...the only iPhones in the black market are stolen), the police for using a taser where (at most) all they had to do was to each grab her by one arm and walk her to a store that sells Androids, the taser manufacturers for continuing to claim that these do not cause physiological damage in spite of the mountain of research that contradicts this claim, and the woman for trying to give money to Apple (and for not learning any english after 3 years of immersion)!

I don't see how she was breaking any rules asking to purchase a device. It isn't like she was trying to bargain with them or steal it. If she is paying for it, they are getting the money for it. I'm sure she speaks some English, it does take a while even when immersed into the society. But basic English makes it hard enough to live and buy things in our country, let alone try to figure out why she is being forced to leave and getting man-handled by two men. I already put myself in her position. Imagine walking into a store in China and them refusing to sell you a product you have the money for. No idea why, can't understand the confusing explanation. So police get called, then they start yelling at you, still confused, just want to make a simple purchase, so they pull you from the store and taser you. And you wish you were back in America, where we supposedly have rights.

The language argument is BS. I don't care what language you speak or don't speak. It can be made obviously clear that someone wants you out of the store through body language and especially when the cops show up with guns and tazers. A reason to leave? Apple didn't want to sell anything to her and that's ALL THE REASON THEY NEED in this great country. So when you're clearly told to leave and you refuse even with a cop pointing a tazer in your face you deserve every last ounce of pain coming to you.

Bottom line the law states that Retailers have the right to refuse anyone business at any time for any reason and request any said person to be removed from the premises. The minute she was ask to leave the store, that's where the talking stops and you leave.

Were the Apple employees wrong for doing this? Morally yes, legally no.

So then the police get there to help escort her off the property, from there' it's a question of did they use appropriate force to do so? In this case like many other taser cases, I would say they used excessive force, they could have just restrained her walked her out, set her free and give her a fine. If she assaults the officer then use whatever is considered equal force.

Either way in the court of the law, she's not going to find much sympathy there because she did in fact ignored Apple's request for her to leave. That's when she should have shut up and simply go to another store. I can't say she deserved what happened, but nor is she innocent.

and your "details are not bs"?dont know where you come from but i have seen countless instances of language getting in the way.your entitled to your opinion,so lets hear it,not garbage.as for an irrational hate for apple,i would have to say that this incident just rationalized it.feel free to chime in with more garbage.i know you want to.

My guess was she was trying to buy the additional phones with contract and then cancel. If you tell anyone at any phone store that, they won't sell you the phones. I hate apple but my guess is that they were in the right on this one.
