Amazon launches 'AutoRip,' giving CD buyers free MP3s of their albums

article published on 10 January, 2013

Amazon has launched "AutoRip" today, to much praise. The new feature allows customers to receive free digital copies of their purchased CDs for up to 50,000 albums. I hope that they eventually extend this to other media. For example, giving me e-book versions of printed books I have purchased in the past, or allowing me to stream DVDs that I have purchased.

They have been doing this for sometime now. Also except for getting the MP3's right away and then waiting for the CD(s) to arrive who would need this feature except for the technically ignorant that can't rip their own CD's, which if you know what you are doing should be the preferred method anyhow!

I prefer CD Universe myself over Amazon.

Already happening with their instant video. I bought Hunger Games Blu-Ray/DVD/Ultraviolet combo and as soon as the transaction cleared, the purchased version was in my Amazon library. Very nice.

It will be interesting to see how this gets implemented for non-US customers. I can buy CDs from Amazon and they will ship them to me here in Australia, but I can't buy MP3 versions of the same CDs. The terms of service say US only for MP3 purchases.
